Need a recovery-based Linux LiveCD

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have a laptop that is very very VERY old, it can BARELY, handle Windows 2000.

Anyway, something happened to Windows and it keeps rebooting nonstop, not even safemode helps.

I don't care about the OS on the system, I just want to recover my files, problem is the disk is formatted in NTFS.

What is a good distro of linux that cna boot off a LiveCD, not DVD, dosen't need a lot of system resources, and can read NTFS volumes?

Preferably a distro designed to be used for recovery purposes rather than an actual desktop OS.

To run the Desktop CD (LiveCD + Install CD), you need 128 MB RAM to run or 192 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM.

To install Xubuntu, you need 1.5 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 256 MB RAM.

As I said, this is an OLD system.

It has 128 megs of ram, which is it's MAX!

Well, you didn't list specifications in your original post. "OLD system" can vary wildly. Use the second link and pick for yourself which resource may be a better pick.

Sorry about that

Pentium II - 200mhz

128 megs RAM - it's maximum

Floppy or CD-Rom Drive, both can't be plugged in at the same time.

Don't tell me you got msblaster... If that's so, run "shutdown -a" to prevent it from rebooting and of course update yor system...

Also a good Linux distro that requires few resources would be DSL.

Since we are all suggesting recovery LiveCDs, might I throw in RIP (Recovery Is Possible).

It is pretty much based on command-line apps, but does pop up an X session, if I remember correctly (it's been about a year since I looked at it).

Thanks for the suggestions.

As for RIP, thanks but that was already suggested to me, and when I looked it up, it needs minimum 256 megs of ram, 512 recommended, so sadly I cannot use that one, even though it looks extremely powerful.
