+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted November 1, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted November 1, 2008 Right I have more computers now that I have Windows licenses, and am becoming quite impressed by the ease-of-use that Linux flavours seem to have developped over the last few years. I am going to move one of my machines over to Ubuntu. But before I do, just a few questions: 1) BitTorrent Client: I am currently using Azareus under XP. What is a decent alternative under linux? 2) NewsGroups: I use an app called NewsBin - it subscribes to groups and collates multi-part uploads into a nice single download. Is there a decent linux alternative? 3) Limewire: In fairness, I VERY rarely have need for this - but an alternative would be nice. 4) VNC: What's a decent VNC app that will allow my Vista notebook to connect to my Linux desktop? Thanks :)

Others will have suggestions I'm sure. 3. LimeWire FrostWire is LimeWire without ads. It works under Linux as well as OS X and Windows. (-> http://www.frostwire.com) 4. VNC Xvnc is part of most distributions. Hope to have helped.
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted November 1, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted November 1, 2008 Thank you for your contribution. Of course Azureaus is Java and will work under Linux - forgot, sorry!
Lechio
2) NewsGroups: There's the mozilla suite, now known as "seamonkey-mailnews". Search for it in your package manager. There's always the option of running "NewsBin" over wine if you really like how that program works.

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted November 1, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted November 1, 2008 I'll take a look at "Pan". Wine? FYI: Newsbin is an app basically for downloading Binaries from alt.binaries...

Pan is able to download binaries from newsgroups as well. Wine is not an emulator. It 'is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.' which lets you run Windows programs under Linux.

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted November 1, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted November 1, 2008 Ah, so WINE would be crap for graphical intensive stuff, or intensive in any way - as the layers all on top of the Linux layers would assume lag. But for a simple interface app that does some downloading, should be ok?

But for a simple interface app that does some downloading, should be ok? Wine runs windows binaries. It doesn't have to be 3D games. Things like notepad, minesweeper and many other .exe files. And it generally doesn't add any extra time - in some cases execution with wine is faster than Windows native.

But for a simple interface app that does some downloading, should be ok? It's not that linear, some applications work OK, others don't. Of course it's always a better solution, in terms of performance, to run an application that is native to the system. Saying that Wine is "crap" for graphical intensive stuff isn't that true, as it can even be used to play games.
GatorV
Exactly I use Wine to play Warcraft 3 on my laptop (on Bnet :-)).
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted November 1, 2008 Author Subscriber² Share Posted November 1, 2008 Impressive, will clear all the stuff off this PC that needs be, and get myself Linux on it. As the list of apps above pretty much details my needs - reckon Ubuntu will do, or suggest otherwise?
Elv13
You can try Ubuntu 8.10, Kubuntu 8.10 and madriva 2008.1 (not 2009, it is similar to Kubuntu 8.10) if you have sometime and no bandwith caps. They have different interfaces, one may fit your need more than the 2 other. It depend on taste. All of them are availible as Live-CD.

Ubuntu will do, seeing how it is the easiest to use distribution for someone with little to no Linux experience.

But for a simple interface app that does some downloading, should be ok? Sorta. The non-graphical and opengl/directx stuff suffers little or no performance loss. Graphical stuff using regular win32 graphics WILL be slower (because of the way graphics are done in wine), but most of the time, it's not noticeable. Don't let it put you off. TruckWEB
Just asking... Does the Creative X-Fi work with any distro?
Elv13
Creative published the (incomplete and broken) driver today. If they work, it is because the distro include one of the previous attempt to write one, like the OSS one.
AJerman
2) NewsGroups:There's the mozilla suite, now known as "seamonkey-mailnews". Search for it in your package manager. There's always the option of running "NewsBin" over wine if you really like how that program works. I'm just now playing in Linux again on my Macbook, however, I did very much prefer to use NewsBin over wine last time I used Linux. I'm just used to NewsBin by now, not to mention I have a valid license for it. Might as well not waste it.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 9, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 9, 2008 ... not to mention I have a valid license for it. Might as well not waste it. Does that logic really drive decisions? Because your Macbook has a valid license for OSX, so why "waste" it running Linux? ;) In the end, it doesn't matter what software you invested money in, or have licenses for. Just run what you like, and don't take previous purchases into it. (Y)

(Y) Hey, I don't like wasting money. ;) It works great under wine and I'm used to it, and a good newsreader is surprisingly hard to find, so why not use it? The biggest decision maker was just that I have never really liked anything else as much as Newsbin.
