Signature File Size

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I was trying to create a new Signature & Avatar combo tonight but I kept hitting the same snag on the signature, the file size. I created a decent looking imagine with some transparency effects around the edges but the image was around 120 kb at 400 x 140. So I tried cropping, reducing the size but it never came near the 50kb mark. So by the time the picture was stamp-sized it was around the 40kb mark in Photshop.

I know this has been brought up a few times already and many, many members I've spoken to would like to see an increased size. Those users with no access to fast connections at work or certain regions of the world could just disable signatures, not really necessary for them to have signatures enabled in the first place on such slow connections?

So wouldn't it be about time to increase the size just a bit, to around 80kb perhaps, maybe even more? Maybe we would also see some new-found creativity among members when they are allowed a bit more head room :)

Yeah I agree, I'd definitely like to see an increase in size. Diemensions are fine as they are really, but the file size is really restricting when trying to be creative with signatures.

Not really necessary for anyone to have sigs enabled.

Instead of those with slow connections disabling them, why dont those with large sigs reduce them?

Why should those with slower connections be penalised just so some others can have fancy dancy sigs?

size is big enough for me, what you're proposing would mean a page having about 1MB in sigs which is quite a lot for people on slower connections

I agree.

Radish?

The sig size is fine with me but I would like the Avatar size brought up to 100 x 100 and leave the 20kb size max. I don't see how this would effect anyone with a dial up.

No thanks. The current signature size is just about right at the moment, not too big and therefore not too distracting and not taking up too much bandwidth.

Not this again.

This gets talked about so much, but things shouldn't change. I don't want to load even more then I need to. Can't you guys just compress your images a little bit more?

its fine the way it is, learn to compress.

it's hard to compress PNG files

But I agree with the rule changes to 100kb. Those rules were set in 2002, and who actually uses dialup anymore?

You've changed your tune, ah - edited your signature for size eh?

50kb is perfectly fine, actually 35kb should be fine too imo...

For example just opening up irfanview and putting it down to 90% cut down rappeh's file size from 46kb to 8kb really without any loss in quality...Which could at least be done to pretty much every sig above 30kb...

But it doesn't make it transparent :p

I always make sure when making a sig that it is below 50kb even with added effects.

Honestly, I had absolutely no idea my signature was over sized. I originally made it a JPG, than someone suggested I make it PNG to make it transparent. The signature guidelines completely slipped my mind.

It was either resize it.. don't change it, or use this one..

Soldiers and civilians working overseas still use dial-up. I'm lucky to have DSL, but it's still very slow compared to people who live above the equator.

75kb should be not that bad. Plus it would give possibility to get PNG Transparencies.

Cuz serious, Gif sucks and are so 2000-ish...

Just run them though PNGcrush or something similar, and whilst in photoshop don't tell it to use 12/Maximum Quality in the file save windows.

you don't get a file quality option on png's.

There's a "Save as Web" option in Photoshop, which is what I use for my signatures. I believe the file size should stay this way because even though I'm on broadband, I still have trouble opening large wallpapers in The Media Section, not to mention all the signatures of the people posting there.

Just a reminder, there is an option to disable signatures on neowin, if your connection is having problems loading
