MariosX
What's the difference between: ubuntu, xubuntu, edubuntu, kubuntu Which one should I install and why? Is it lighter than Windows? I tried a LiveCD ubuntu 8.04 I can say its an awesome easy-to-use OS the most impressive for me was when I tried to view a video it Auto-searched for codecs and found them and everything else worked flawlessly. I mainly use an OS for Multimedia/Internet/IM and MMO-Gaming like Lineage II and World of Warcraft and I saw they can be played using PlayOnLinux Also the main reason looking for a new OS is because you can do the very same thing in a lighter enviroment
TrickierStinky
xubuntu to me just seems so nice to run easier, if not sure what to get try wubi and try them all, then if you dont like it just uninstall through add/remove on windows :)

markwolfe Veteran Posted November 4, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 4, 2008 Since you asked about being "lighter than Windows", I voted Xubuntu because of the lighter XFCE desktop. It still runs all the same Gnome or KDE apps and such, but is a little faster on lower-end PCs.
Kami-
I like Xubuntu.
roadgeek9
I seriously prefer Fedora Linux, but of the 4 options, I would pick Ubuntu. Here's the difference: Ubuntu - GNOME Desktop, Xubuntu - XFCE Desktop, Kubuntu - KDE Desktop, Edubuntu - I know of it, but I don't know the difference between it and Ubuntu
brentaal
Ubuntu (CLI install + gnome-core, much lighter than the default install)

Kami-
In what way is Xubuntu "lighter" than Ubuntu? In the Gnome vs XCFE way.
brentaal
Xubuntu is a bit snappier, but can't be considered "light". There are far better implementations of XFCE out there, with Xubuntu being probably one of the most bloated.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 4, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 4, 2008 XFCE uses a bit less resources, and generally defaults to lighter apps like thunar browser instead of nautilus, and so forth. On a system that runs Gnome well, you probably won't see a difference. But the thread starter seemed to be concerned about performance, so may have a less capable machine. In those cases, there is a noticeable difference between XFCE and Gnome. For me, I prefer the very light Fluxbox, which lacks desktop icons or a "start button". Even on my new box which isn't low-end and could run Gnome very well, I have grown so fond of flux, that I keep using it for my desktop. But those things are a matter of taste, really. Kreuger
I use Xubuntu because of XFCE being "light weight". I used to use KDE but it felt too slow so I went with Fluxbox however I missed having an actual desktop environment and got sick of just having a window manager. So I went with XFCE. In the Gnome vs XCFE way. I've always considered XFCE to be Gnome lite. It seems like a stripped down version to me..
MariosX
Sorry I didn't say my system specs: M/B: ASUS A8V-E Deluxe CPU: AMD64 3000+ RAM: 2x 1gig VGA: Albatron GForce 6800GS 128mb HDD: 80giga / 320giga To me they look like the same. Kubuntu has nicer effects though.

redvamp128
Why not install Ubuntu-- then apt in the other window managers--- and find the one that you like the best-- On my Ubuntu -- I have the Kubuntu desktop (KDE)-- Xubuntu desktop (XFCE), LXDE - FluxBox (which has a few issues they are working out)-- At the sign in screen all I have to do is select the window manager I want to use- For me I use the standard Gnome (ubuntu) for general use-- I use LXDE when I work with wine applications. You just have to find the one that suits you the most.
