Spammers.

How about members with less than say 10 posts being unable to make new threads.

Ok so they can post spam in existing threads but they can be deleted and banned early without making lots of new useless threads.

I think that would just put people off registering, as a lot of people (me included) registered in order to get specific help for my problems. This would really just get people to make lots of "+1" "lol" "Yeah I agree" "hahah " posts that just bog down other threads.

I HATE the kitteh capture on rapidshare. It's actually hard to do :p

I like the math idea :)

@Relativity: ∫sin? x dx = ? x − ? sin 2x + C would be the answer (I thi:p :p)

Maybe something that can't be formulated for a bot. Something like "if I was [insert animal captcha here] what sound would I make?"

Why not use the same registration process already seen on IPB forums?

We do, with the new CAPTCHA and a RECAPTCHA. What more can we do? Admin validation is simply not possible with the amount of signups we get.

I see part of the problem is Neowin is very POPULAR on Google searches.

They see the result on Google, they don't think this forum is for Computer-knowledged users, they just probably think it's a 'Social forum' for everybody when the keyword they search for results in a Neowin thread ;)

You want to eliminate such problems, you may want to tell Google to NOT index Neowin!

I did have a 1-post guy told me some news I didn't knew about though.

No, you only have one CAPTCHA at the moment. RECAPTCHA is in verison 2.3.6 of IPB.

Disclaimer: I made a test account to prove it. Not sure if this is against the rules but I won't be validating the confirmation link. I only have one account at Neowin. :shiftyninja: Anyways here it is...

It's too simple of a registration process. The CAPTCHA is way too simple and as a result, all the spambots appear to be getting through it.

You can implement the same registration process on the IPB forums instead of waiting for IPB 3.0 which is still months away.

Neowin forums is powered By IP.Board ? 2008 IPS, Inc.

IPB forums is powered By IP.Board 2.3.6 ? 2008 IPS, Incb>

Why not update to 2.3.6? Does the update cost money? I'm not certain of this, but maybe 2.3.6 has better forum features preventing spam on top of the better CAPTCHA. A link to 2.3.6 updates including information on RECAPTCHA - http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=277604

Here is the registration process on IPB forums.

Its getting ridiculous with increase in the amount of spam on Neowin. Considering this is a tech forum and all, shouldn't spam be a thing of the past for a community such as ourselves???;);)

You're right, the fix for 2.3.5 didn't include the recaptcha.

I don't quite understand what point you were trying to make by posting the Powered by lines, as we don't show what version we use on purpose, which was suggested, IIRC, by IPB themselves as a method of avoiding the hackers who were compromising IPB installations by searching for and finding vulnerable boards on Google.

As it's vaguely relevant, could there be some method of preventing people replying with 3 words or less, in posts. It would stop a lot of 'actual human being' spam. If all someone has to add to the topic is '' or 'QFT', or 'LMAO', then they needn't have added anything at all.

yeh!

yeh!

QFT. </sarcasm>

on topic: I really doubt there are bots which just spam QFT, lol. Imagine if they lol'd at the wrong post. Example - "so... my dog died today and i'm heartbroken" LMAO!

I realized that after I posted. I posted to show that Neowin wasn't up to date on the version and can easily be noticed due to the lack of a reCAPTCHA. Which from the IPB forums shows that it helps reduce spam, if not altogether.

I personally would like to see the spam (bots) stopped. I find it annoying clicking on a thread and reading all these tags or links to porn sites, products no one wants, or pictures of nudity.

I wish all spam would just stop, it would make things so much easier
