Helping the new guy.........

Recommended Posts

After I saw what was comming next from windows I made the switch to linux. I played with it a year or so ago. Because I am so new and Learning allot the hard way I just though it may help to offer a real noobies wish list.

1. When I asked about which verson of linux I wanted, Sure wish somone would of told me.......First decide which desktop you want, Kde or Gnome, You want exploding boxes and screens and rotating cubes, And willing to learn keyboard shortcuts, Go with KDE, If you want to learn linux with something a bit more simple to use, Go with gnome. Yes you can customize gnome and it still offers some pretty neat window effects.

2. There are tons of choices, Generally speaking one will offer you no more fetures than the next. There are Way Many more people using ubuntu, You can easily google your ubuntu question and finding the answer Is super simple.

3. After your done head over to www.howtoforge.com. You can find a simple step by step guide to get Linux going, set up a bit better. It makes setting up linux so it has all the stuff you need for the internet lots easier.

The above information would of saved me TONS of time, As a new user, you think each flavor of linux must offer something diffrent, You don't realize its the desktop kde, or gnome that really decides how linux runs and acts. While I will probally get flamed, if this helps Just one new user make the switch a bit easier it will be worth it.

Now if you want gnome go find and download ubuntu with gnome, or ubuntu with kde, or witch ever verson of linux you decide to go with.

Most want you to believe that linux is hard to learn. Its only for geeks. No its not. I would put ubuntu on my mothers puter. You wanna surff without the fear of virus and spyware gon linux, Your a install this and that program from the internet. Stay with windows. You wanna surff and watch movies and videos and no worries learn linux you will be glad you did.

I kind of have made it a point in many of my past points to say that one Linux is pretty much like another, and that your choice of desktop and apps make it unique.

However, it is hard to tell people this, and you can point to KDE, XFCE, Gnome and Openbox screenshots, but they don't get anything relevant across. You have to use an environment to see if it works with you, really.

Plus, you can install many different desktops and try them all on whichever distro you choose.
