tym
I have used this program on windows Xp for a long time. Very useful to me. I am still super new to linux. I did try to find in the synaptic package manager with no luck. If someone could tell me how to install this one with ubuntu and gnome I sure would be grateful. Thank you much. http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/#download
Lechio
For KDE there is kmag. Guess it should work OK with Gnome too. EDIT: Oh and magnifier works with Linux too. On their site you have the Linux download. EDIT2: On gnome the equivalent is called gnome-mag. look for it in synaptic. SoCalledChaos
doesn't Ubuntu come with a Magnifier pre-installed?
tym
Kmag is a stationary box. Think the one pre installed is as well. Just would love to find one I can drag around the screen as needed or wanted. If someone has any other ideas besides the program above I am all eyes. I did try to find in the synaptic package manager with no luck. If someone could tell me how to install this one with ubuntu and gnome I sure would be grateful. Thank you much. http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/#download  The link you provided has a Linux download. Also, just for giggles, I ran the Windows .exe under wine, and it works fine. (it even created a persistent wine system tray for me to call the app back up at any time) I would download the tarball ".tar.gz" file, open it with the archive manager (Ubuntu should prompt you for this) and save the folder to your home somewhere. Inside that folder, I see an "install.sh" file. Run that, and it should install the native Linux version for you. If you try this, and still run into problems, post back here and we should be able to help with the specifics.
tym
OK I have the program on my desktop. I created a folder, right click extract here. I did find the install.sh and when I try to open I get a box to run or open terminal. I tried both options, and no luck. I have looked and Dont?? Think it installed. Not sure if it installs silently? I would think there would be a conformationl box? I also tried the Snyptic route and no luck there either.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 10, 2008 Can I ask you to open up a terminal (also called a shell or console) and navigate to the directory with your install.sh file manually? I want you to run the file from there, by typing in: ./install.sh (the "./" forces a run from the current directory) and the goal is to see if it is generating a fault, and find out what fault is being generated. tym
I tried to open, Click on the box run in terminal, Nothing. I would think There would be a program to open this. I mean right click, open with, then poof, asks for password. Simple easy. I think? the .sh is a simple script, or maybe a .bat? Not sure on that one have to google/research that one. So I just can not get it to open at all. Its on the desktop, I am guessing the next step is open with the console maybe?? I just hope you know I really appreciate the help. And while I for sure want the program. I am also using this as a lesson to better use linux.
+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted November 10, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted November 10, 2008 Click on Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal. There enter user@host $ cd Desktop/magnifier-linux-3.3.1 user@host: ~/Desktop/magnifier-linux-3.3.1 $ ./install.sh This should install the program. If there are error messages about missing programs or libraries post them here for further assistance.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 10, 2008 ... So I just can not get it to open at all. Its on the desktop, I am guessing the next step is open with the console maybe?? ... Yes, that is what I asked in my previous post. And you are right that the .sh shell script is much like a .bat batch file, and contains commands to be run (so you don't have to type in a complex sequence of commands yourself). I am guessing that it may be trying to compile the source code for you, but you may not have a compiler installed (I am really not fond of compiling, and much rather get my apps right from synaptic). However, I cannot be sure of the right direction until you open up a terminal first, then cd to the directory containing your installer.

I just can not seem to get it open the terminal, I am a long time windows geek. I have thrown just about every trick I can think of at it. I did find that nataluis may be the way to go with it ?? Open it with that. If thats the case, Can I get that option in the right click. Not sure. There has to be a simple way I would think. I agree. Not crazy about the compile script thing. I did hunt around to try to find it in a repository someplace. It is free and is for linux. Guess no one has it?? It would for sure make it more noobie/window user to offer a simple right click command on the script to compile. I can understand the danger, I can understand that not being put there by defaut. But a way/option to simplify the process for the new user sure would be sweet ya know. I am getting off subject I think. So any other options you can think of to get this task done? I am pretty sure I have all the right repositorys added. Had to do that when I wanted opera. I did the search in the repository's. Used synaptic. markwolfe Veteran Posted November 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 10, 2008 First, open a terminal. I think you are fixated on operating on the file, and haven't just opened up the Ubuntu main applications menu and opened up a terminal.
tym
First, open a terminal.I think you are fixated on operating on the file, and haven't just opened up the Ubuntu main applications menu and opened up a terminal. Your right mark, and Sorry about that. My bad. I am off to try again. I am getting "command not found." I did the copy and paste just like you typed. Retyped and changed user with the name I use on my computer, When I do open the console I get the line Myusername@Myusername-desktop:-$ If that has any thing to do with the price of tea in china. If it helps, the name I use for my computer is "tim" Its the name of the computer, Name I log on with. Edited November 10, 2008 by tym
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 10, 2008 I am going to guess you get command not found because you haven't changed to the directory where the file is? Can you cd to the directory where your file is stored?
tym
I am going to guess you get command not found because you haven't changed to the directory where the file is?Can you cd to the directory where your file is stored? Oh no sir. The file is still on my desktop in the same place it was opened. I just find it easier to extract and leave on my desktop. Old window habbits sometimes die hard. :) I simply missed the CD part of that command you asked me to use. DUHHHHHH. So now you now where it is that should make it a bit easier to help. And again. I thank you kindly for the help. The full path to the file is /home/tim/Desktop/magnify/magnifier-linux-3.3.
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 10, 2008 Ok. If that is the exact path to the file, you should be able to open a terminal, then with this post open in your browser, drag and select the following line: /home/tim/Desktop/magnify/magnifier-linux-3.3.1/install.sh and do a middle-click in your terminal window. What you selected, above, should be pasted when you do a middle click, and if you also selected the Carriage Return, it will try to run. If it didn't run, just hit ENTER in your terminal to execute the pasted command. When (if?) it errors trying to do the install, let us know what it says. You can copy/paste it, if it seems to be too wordy.
Lechio
If you haven't already managed to install the application I've packaged it for Ubuntu. Just download the attached zip file, extract it, double-click the .deb file and press "install package" when it prompts you. To run it just run from a terminal: vmg & And to create a shortcut on your desktop: right-click the desktop>Create launcher...; on "Name" put: Magnifier on "Command" put: /usr/bin/vmg click the icon on the left and choose an icon you like and it's done. Will contact the maintainers of the project so they can include a package for Debian. Lechio
You have to install the program first. Double click the "magnifier_3.3.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb" file. Run it after it is installed.

Lechio
Step #1: Download the zip file Step #2: Browse to the directory where the zip file you just download is Step #3: Extract the zip file Step #4: Browse to the directory where you just extracted the file Step #5: Double-click the "magnifier_3.3.1-1ubuntu1_i386.deb" file Step #6: A dialog appears after that done, choose install package Step #7: Program is now installed Step #8: Run it from the shortcut you've previously created on the desktop or from terminal by typing "vmg &" What is failing after all of those steps done? Got it down from the net. It was put in a folder on desktop. Extrated to that folder. Opened it up. Said it installed. Even got a pop up telling me about it. Opened the terminal and did a copy paste of what was told to put, vmg & and got the error message mentioned. Created a shortcut. Did the same thing, copy paste word for word, And got the error message mentioned. So someplace Between the install which worked ok fine, to ubuntu being able to find the installed program seems to be the issue. I did try 2 different times. Step by step, copy and paste. Some reason ubuntu just is unable to find it??
