Ouch. Gaming motion sickness?

Recommended Posts

I got it really bad trying to play the original Wing Commander on a new system. No frame rate limiter is a bad thing.

I'm kidding, didn't get motion sickness, don't really see how you can, since it's mostly your ears that make you feel that way.

There were all kinds of reports of the Descent series causing motion sickness. There's also something about flashing lights that has been known to cause epilleptic seizures (not sure if that's the correct spelling or not) in some people. Never happened to me though, and I've been playing games since the Atari 2600.

I can't play HL2 at all. No FPS gets me sick at all except for that one. I have no idea why. But seriously, I feel like throwing up after a few minutes of HL2. Maybe the FOV is causing it. I haven't a clue. The only other PC FPS games I've played recently are Crysis, Warhead, and COD4 SP. No console FPS since the N64 days has made me sick. It was the dreadful framerate and fog causing it in the N64 days.

I sometimes get motion sickness when playing GTA:IV. The funny thing is, that it only happened in GTA:IV, not in the previous games. Maybe because it looks more real than the previous games.

Only two games have ever done that to me.

Blood (1 or 2, can't remember) and Turok (Either 2 or 3, can't remember).

HL2 never did though. Great game, an played it for hours. I've played a bunch of games, and only those two games have ever done that to me.

I have got headaches, but only from playing games for a long time straight. Also one time I had a bit drink one night, and a lot to eat, and started gaming that night, ended in me throwing up all of what I had that night.

I get motion sickness in aircraft and small/light cars that feel most of the bumps in the road, and I have NEVER gotten motion sickness from playing video games. I have gotten headaches on rare occasion, typically after spending hours staring at a monitor, but never nausea, thats including playing pretty much every FPS thats been out in the past two years.

Beyond that, headaches from motion sickness seem to be somewhat limited to simulation (which includes gaming, etc). The absolute best way to get rid of it is via Dimenhydrinate (marketed as Dramamine, Gravol, or Vertirosan), it can help alleviate symptoms and fully prevent them, sadly, without buying over-the-counter meds, the only ways to prevent it (or help alleviate it) is to close your eyes or take a nap. The only other "natural" methods involve staring at the horizon while in a vehicle, which isnt really possible while playing a game.

All said and done theres not much you can do against motion sickness from video games other than to avoid it or take some Dramamine whenever you want to play the games that cause it, luckily video games dont effect me, despite not being able to travel in my fathers vehicle for more than 15 minutes without feeling it (without taking any meds).

I can't say I've ever gotten motion sick playing a game. Even ones with shaky ass camera's like mirror's edge. I do get motion sick incredibly easy when sitting in the back of a car though.
