Differences in Member ID Badges

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that there are number of areas in which member id badges on Neowin vary and I'm not sure why as it seems like most of the stuff I've seen is not under the user's control.

For example, there are different "groups:" some like "registered" and "global moderator" make sense, but other's like "subscriber" are ambiguous at best and it seems that some group names are actually unique to a particular member. What's the deal with this?

Also it's seems like the post ranking structure varies considerably, there's definitely a neowin standard ranking system (neowinian, neowinian^2, neowinian^3, etc.) But some members seem to have ranks that are completely made up. How is this possible?

Finally, some people seem to have figured out a way to add graphics to the profile badge, (I'm not talking about signatures at the bottom of posts or the badge avatars but additional images on the actual badge on the left of each post), how is this possible?

Please excuse my ignorance, but after being a member (allbeit participating off and on) for 3 or 4 years now, it's really started to bother me that I can't figure it out.

It's not. Any and all of the possible badges are categorized into groups.

Veterans are ex-staff that left on good terms.

MVCs are members that have been rewarded for their community contributions.

Subscribers are members that have paid money for extra features. It's not exactly unique to us, three of the websites that I visit daily (deviantArt, Last.fm, and Neowin) all have Subscriber groups of members and a subscription system in place.

If you screenshot anything you're unfamiliar with, we'll explain it. :)

The groups are very well defined here and there's no facility for per-user custom badges whatsoever.

Ok... well for starters, what's your group mean? Neowin Developer...that's one I haven't seen before.

He's a web developer for Neowin, which means he designs things like the new Finity design.

The developer team actually does everything concerning coding around Neowin. This can go from a simple adjustment in the code to writing a whole mobile skin.

Seriously? Make an effort, man, you're killing me. Do you ever READ what people point you to?

Actually to answer your question, yes I do, I just didn't think to go back to it with this question. Although I did bookmark it, I'll try to remember to refer to it in the future before I post something.
