Indiana University of Pennsylvania officials officially broke ground for the university?s proposed convention center during a ceremony this morning.

Saying it was a historic occasion for IUP and Indiana County, IUP President Tony Atwater told the audience that the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex will be a catalyst for the area?s economic revitalizatioAlso, IUP alumnus Chad Hurley, one of the founders of YouTube, announced during the ceremony that he was donating $1 million to the project in honor of his track and field coach, Ed Fry. As a result, the university is naming an indoor arena in the convention center after Fry, calling it the Ed Fry Arena

In addition to the arena, the convention center is to house an amphitheater, banquet halls and meeting space and offices for the athletic department and the John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security. It is scheduled to open in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Foundation for IUP, the university?s nonprofit fundraising arm, is planning to build a 140-room upscale hotel next door as a complement business.

Robert O. Davies, the foundation?s executive director, said it is projected that the convention center will generate $2 million in economic activity for the area during construction and $12.5 million each year in its first 10 years of operation.
