KeeperOfThePizza
Is 64bit really any faster than 32bit? and Would 2gigs of ram be enough for Ubuntu 64bit?
markwolfe Veteran Posted November 18, 2008 Veteran Share Posted November 18, 2008 64-bit isn't significantly faster or slower, based on its architecture. It does, however, have the ability to directly address large amounts of memory, whereas 32-bit can only directly address 4GB (minus overhead, and plus if using PAE to swap chunks of memory). With 2GB of RAM, either will suffice. If you think you might upgrade your RAM in the future, you might seriously consider 64-bit now, to avoid needing to change your installed OS when you add in more RAM. Elv13
64bit desktop linux is slower and buggyer than 32bit version. Flash exist in 64bit only since 26 hours and firefox in general is 10 time slower on 64bit than on 32, same things for many apps. I use both, I can tell and ask everyone who is not a 64bit addict, he/she will admit than 32bit desktop apps are faster. This will change, at least I hope so, but right now, windows 64 and linux 64 (desktop) are not yet as used/tested/optimised than 32bit counterpart.
