Edit Button

I know in another thread Joel mentioned there is a time limit as to how long you have to edit a thread, but I recently came across a situation where I wanted to edit a particular post and couldn't despite the fact that I could still edit earlier posts. What's the deal?

You have 30 minutes to edit your post after that, you can't.

Ok but that doesn't explain why I can't edit one post when I can still edit another post.

Why is there a 30 minute time limit? It is very inconvenient.

Could you describe a situation where this is inconvenient? Allowing members to edit their posts for much longer can potentially ruin the flow of conversation in a thread.

True.

But what if your comment is still the last one on the thread?

I would propose a modification. Remove the edit button if anyone has contributed further in the thread. Keep it intact as long as no one has posted after you.

That way, the flow will not be affected.

No. 30-45 minutes is ample time to add to a post.

K..

I used a comma where I should not have in a post today. :)

Realized that only when I happened to read the post again after quite some time.

I'm sure you could be forgiven for a small grammatical error...

^^

I was just giving an example. Sometimes, you make small mistakes that actually change the meaning of a sentence completely. On reflection, you realize this and are unable to do anything about it.

Forget it. It was just a suggestion.

It's fine the way it is I think. 30 minutes is a lot of time to think about and edit if you need to.

Grammatical errors are the end of the world. Any moment now, the Grammar Nazis will be knocking his door down.

An English professor wrote the words, “Woman without her man is nothing” on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote: “Woman, without her man, is nothing.”

The women wrote: “Woman: Without her, man is nothing.”

:)

^

I see your point though. I generally agree with your suggestion:

Allow me to modify something in your suggestion: if anyone has contributed further in the thread, at that point the 30 minute timer will start counting down as usual.

Edit: I know you said no, Joel, but that's just my suggestion :)

Isn't it so that if you subscribe you can edit your thread all the time? If yes, subscribe and your problem is solved. If no, still subscribe but be a contributive member who stands out in a positive way. By doing so they may pick you when a new moderator needs to be chosen and then you can edit your threads and those of other persons. *mystery*
