Forum Post Breakdowns

Recommended Posts

I've looked around and I'm pretty sure there's no way to do this so I thought I'd suggest it and see what people thought, I'd be particularly interested to hear what developers think of it.

Anyway, on our profile page it says which forum we have been most active in, and it got me thinking, it would be really cool if we could get a breakdown of all our posts by forum. A graphical representation would be great but even a tabular breakdown would be cool. I figure the capability is already there since the system clearly already gathers that information, so I guess the big question is how hard would it be to implement?

This, would be an IPB (Invision Power Board), what the forum is running off of. Neowin doesn't develop it, so this would be an idea for the guys over at http://invisionpower.com/

Neowin already has so many mods, that from what I know, don't like to add anymore, unless necessary.

I am right in thinking that there is currently no way to do that though right?

It would depend how the database is set up, and from what I can only imagine, IPB is not setup to handle that.

How would I go about making that suggestion to IPB?

How do you figure? I mean if they can tell us which forum we are most active on than they already have the tracking in place, I don't see how it would take much to create a graphical (or even a text-based) display of the breakdown of our posts by forum.

http://www.invisionpower.com/

that's their web site, and can be made there.

It is possible to return all results and build a database out of all the current posts, but that would put such a strain on the server with over 8million posts

Yeah I know that's there site but there doesn't seem to be any place to submit suggestions. I'd let it go but I think this is a really cool idea.

thanks kinetix63.. didn't know I had to spell it out for him... just kind of assumed he'd figure it out.

First, I don't see why you felt the need to talk down to me. Second, the reason I didn't figure it out, was because I was looking for an e-mail address, I wasn't thinking I'd have to join a new forum just to make one suggestion.

Actually I'm now pretty sure the most posts statistic itself is a mod. IPB's own forum doesn't have it. Given that the funcitionality is already there, I fail to see how actually displaying what it is already tracking beneath the surface would put an incredibly significant additional strain on the server resources.

Ideally, I'd like to have a link where the current most posts statistic is on the front page of the profile that says something like "Activity by Forum," it would link to a page with a bar graph that would show a graphical breakdown of all of the member's posts according to which forum they were posted in. Each bar would have the actual number of posts as well as the overall percentage listed underneath it.

Another idea I've had since originally posting this thread is to also show on a member's profile how many posts he or she has made in the last day (ideally right under the posts per day stat). Again this is something that is already being tracked, (it has to be in order to show the current day's top 20 posters).

I know the devs are leary about adding any more mods but I really think this would be a cool thing to do, so I hope the devs will consider it. It doesn't seem like it should take all that much effort since the information is already being tracked.
