Saving Lists of Old Posts

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there is a way to keep a list of posts for quick reference within Neowin even after they go inactive (i.e. there are no new posts for more than seven days). Right now the only way I can figure to do it is with browser bookmarks, but it seems odd that if you can save subscriptions of active threads you can't do the same for inactive ones.

While were on the topic: Why the seven-day pruning rule on subscriptions anyway? I'd like to keep the FAQ in there but I can't because it gets dropped immediately.

Options > Track this topic.

That only works for active threads, if they're inactive for seven days they get dropped.

Am I to understand that there is no way to keep a list of old posts within the neowin interface then?

Your browser supports bookmarks, so what would be the point of the forum software duplicating that functionality.

By that logic, there's no since in having subscription/topic tracking at all. Not that you don't make a good point, just that I think there's an inconsistency issue. If you think bookmarks are sufficient then why have tracking at all? On the other hand, if you think the tracking feature is a valuable feature than why have that annoying 7-day pruning rule (by the way I know of at least one other member who is incredibly irked by it)?

Because I find it very useful to be able to track new posts to threads I'm interested in without having to check through loads of bookmarks just to find out there's been no update. Once a thread has had no posts for 7 days, chances are it has dropped off the first page of the forum, and won't get any further replies. I'm not interested in a post that has no relevance added to a thread 4 years after the last post was made to it.

But why not allow it? I mean it wouldn't hurt anything, the infrastructure and programming is already there. Why restrict things more than they have to be?

Go and ask the developers at IPB.

$@$#^&@!! That's an IPB thing too!?! I would have bet money that the pruning rule was a neowin decision.

Well if that's the case, I certainly don't expect you guys to mod that. I figured it was something you guys did so it would be as simple as rolling back the mod (assuming the powers that be could be convinced to do that).

Assume if something is annoying, its an IPB 'feature' and bug them about it. 99.99% of the time, you'll be correct.

Good to know.

I joined the IPB forum and discovered that the pruning rule isn't imposed by IPB but rather an option on the platform. IPB's forum has pruning turned off. This means that the powers that be at Neowin could turn it off as well.

They should really consider it, as I have said before, I'm not the only one who finds this annoying.

Maybe you should make a poll about it. It probably wouldn't get anything changed, but I'd be interested in seeing how many people are actually bothered by subscription pruning.

That's never a good measure, as you always get the vocal minority speaking out, if members are happy about a feature, they wont look for a place to complain about it. It's been set this way for years, if you don't like it, I don't imagine it's going to be changed. I suggest you use bookmarks in your browser like I suggested earlier.

So you're saying that anyone who complains is, by definition, a minority? I find at least one major problem with that line of reasoning. In the end, I obviously don't have the power to force a change. But I would hope that Neowin does take suggestions seriously instead of assuming that the only person who has a problem with it is the one that speaks up. Because were the entire staff to take your line of reasoning, nothing would ever change.

I should also point out that forum subscriptions aren't pruned. While most forums have a new post at least once every seven days anyway, I'm pretty sure there are a couple that don't.
