I did a clean install of ubuntu, Then I installed Ubuntu's graphic driver for my Ati X1950pro after that rebooted.. then I noticed little red dots when i set the wallpaper to just a solid black color.. also It locks up for a second and then its fine. What other drivers can I use? Should I use Ubuntu 8.0.4LTS since its been out longer?

Install and try EnvyNG. It'll download and install the proper drivers. Make sure that the proprietary video drivers are deactivated.

Bad idea. Ubuntu 8.10 use a specially build ATI driver. It is a beta of 9.02 tagged with 8.10. Actual driver will fail to work with xserver 1.5 / xorg 7.3.

I've used EnvyNG under 8.10 and it works.

I just used the driver from the repos for my 2600 mobility and it works flawlessly (besides vsync not working with compiz, but I get that with nvidia too so I think it's a compiz problem)

It's odd, you'd think a slightly older mainstream desktop card would be better supported.
