Napalm Frog
Is there any CHEAP webcam that one can pick up that is 100% guaranteed to work with Ubuntu? The current one is an MSI cam that is glitchy enough as it is in Windows, and I can't be bothered to get it working in Linux. And while we are at it, any program that will be the best for webcamming? All I have right now is Pidgin, which has no webcam support. Sticking with the MSN protocol would be great, but not necessarily mandatory.
markwolfe Veteran Posted December 1, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 1, 2008 Well, I don't know of specifics, but GSPCA is supposed to be a big improvement based of the solo work of a doctor in France to support USB webcams. Added into the 2.6.27 kernel. http://www.linuxpromagazine.com/online/new...a/(kategorie)/
Lechio
For the MSN protocol try aMSN. Works nice for "webcamming".
Elv13
Kopete (3.x) is able to use webkam too
Napalm Frog
I've used Kopete and aMSN waaaaaaay back in the day, so I think I'll check them out again. As for webcams themselves, should I stick to something specific, but would something like the cheapest Logitech model be enough? I just need it for live video/voice, and nothing else fancy. Lechio
A cheap one can do that job. After finding the one you would like to buy do a search on that model + the word Linux. Should give an idea on how well that cam works with Linux. Insert webcam model here: http://www.google.com/linux
Kreuger
I have a logitech quickcam and it works great. Back in ubuntu 5 or so, I had to compile the drivers but in the next release, it was included. Now I just plug it in and go. Although my quickcam is older, not sure if you can find one. Fish
I've got an old quickcam that worked OK-ish in Ubuntu 8.04, but is completely dead in 8.10. Go figure. aMSN or Kopette is probably your best bet for webcam in Linux. Emesene devs are working on it, but don't hold your breath. Imo, none of these really compare to WLM and official drivers. Ubuntu (in-built drivers) Windows (Logitech drivers)
Kreuger
Wow that's quite a difference. I've only seen difference depending on the light and that's all that looks like. Just need to maybe tweak it
