Kudos Veteran Posted December 3, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 3, 2008 What is the server for? You can stop it loading the Desktop interface by changing the default runlevel. Just edit /etc/inittab and change the appropriate line from id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault:

Kudos Veteran Posted December 3, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 3, 2008 If it's for home usage, it doesn't matter all that much. Otherwise I would keep it at runlevel 3 (command line interface only) and if you ever need the gui, you can just type "startx" and it'll load it. CrimsonRedMk Member Posted December 27, 2008 Member Share Posted December 27, 2008 For all of the server things from Ubuntu Server Edition, open Synaptic, Edit menu -> Mark Packages by Task and choose what you need.
MR_Candyman
Eh, I have a slackware dekstop mailserver running kde for an office building, which is tethered to an adjacent building (the one company owns the other), serving ~3000 people and it's been a great setup. I really never have to touch the thing. I can't see your server being too affected by the GUI, especially at times when you're not using the machine yourself, and just letting it do it's job.
