Recommended Posts

i wanted to install on a new server ubuntu server 8.10, just now i noticed, i installed desktop edition, ugh, the network is running through like 20 hoops, i really would like to avoid having to set it up (again). can i use ubuntu desktop as server, or is it unacceptable.

also, can i somehow change?

What is the server for?

You can stop it loading the Desktop interface by changing the default runlevel. Just edit /etc/inittab and change the appropriate line from

id:5:initdefault:

to

id:3:initdefault:

If it's for home usage, it doesn't matter all that much. Otherwise I would keep it at runlevel 3 (command line interface only) and if you ever need the gui, you can just type "startx" and it'll load it.

Eh, I have a slackware dekstop mailserver running kde for an office building, which is tethered to an adjacent building (the one company owns the other), serving ~3000 people and it's been a great setup. I really never have to touch the thing. I can't see your server being too affected by the GUI, especially at times when you're not using the machine yourself, and just letting it do it's job.
