less maximum sound under ubuntu

Recommended Posts

hi

i recently switched over to ubuntu from vista and am having a weird problem....the max sound under Linux is quite less when compared to that in vista...i mean in vista i can't use my headphones when the system sound is at max because its too loud....it feels as if the max sound under ubuntu is almost half of that under vista..i am a beginner and have no idea what's going on....i need the vol to step up because for some videos its barely audible....any ideas ??

thanks

and yes i use a hp laptop nx6325 with amd turion x2 and 1 gb ram.

Did you check the sound settings under your sound and video menu.... in alsamixer or volume control? There are multiple slider bars to adjust the output sound volume as well as input devices. I would check there first....

You can also check your system sound settings (System -> Preferences -> Sound). I use Debian instead of Ubuntu, so the pathway may be slightly different.

hey thanks for the quick response....

all the sound settings are at there maximum..rechecked it just in case..

just installed SUSE and same problem persists somewhat...i mean the sound is now audible/ok but only when all sound settings are at their max level......

did you guys notice any sound quality related decrease when u shifted from win to nix..

thanks in adv

I had this on my GF's laptop when I moved it over to Ubuntu. I know little about Linux, but know I ran some command line thing that showed the mixers, and adjusted from there.

Usually this can be attributed to the PCM mixer being set too low (if you have one). The normal volume controls usually adjust Master, but PCM is not effected. If PCM is low, then no matter what Master is set to the sound level will hit a very low max. I know you've said you've adjusted the sliders, but if you would, open up a terminal and run 'alsamixer' and check the sliders there. If they are all up there then I'm not sure where to look.

Edit: I have noticed that my snd_hda_intel card does seem lower than it once was in linux, but it's still usable.

already ran alsamixer ,all the sliders are at their max..

is it some kind of a hardware issue with my laptop model?

current vlc with max vol is just about ok for av...so will use that till a sol..

thanks

Report a bug to the alsa team, it is probably set to low in the code of the driver, they can fix that for the next version of alsa if they have time, it is probably not a big bug (like 1 value in 1 line of code).
