DrunknMunky Veteran Posted December 8, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2008 Microsoft is planning to talk about plans beyond 2009?s Christmas season at next year?s E3, MGS boss Phil Spencer has said, talking in the latest Major Nelson podcast. ?The last two E3s at least, if I use that a proxy for what?s coming, we?ve talked a lot about what its coming in the next five to six months after E3, and we?ve had some pressure that maybe we want to think a little broader about what we want to say at E3, a little further out in the future,? he said. ?I came out of an E3 planning meeting just about an hour ago, and we were looking at some of the plans for the future and things that we might want to tease, and it?s very exciting. ?There?s a lot of stuff on the docket, and maybe we?ll break the bank a little bit and talk about things that are further out, which will hopefully get the community excited.? +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 8, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted December 8, 2008 Yeah I want to hear more about 2009 for MS, as right now publicly it's a bit bare, aside from assuming things like Alan Wake and the next full Halo will hit, etc. I think Splinter Cell will, I mean, it can't be pushing 2010 now. And on a slightly related note, no Xbox 3 yet please, 2010 onwards (Y)
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted December 8, 2008 Author Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2008 Microsoft to talk about its longer term vision for gamingThe last two E3's have been muted affairs, with the main three press conferences from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft being marked by a short-term business focus, as opposed to (the more exciting) outlining longer-term visions and plans for console gaming. Hopefully, this is going to change at E3 2009, with a return to the bigger E3 show of old at the cavernous LA Convention Centre planned. Comments from Microsoft Games Studios' boss Phil Spencer have certainly got gamers excited about E3, with Spencer noting in the latest Major Nelson podcast: "The last two E3s at least, if I use that as a proxy for what's coming, we've talked a lot about what is coming in the next five to six months after E3, and we've had some pressure that maybe we want to think a little broader about what we want to say at E3, a little further out in the future." Xbox 720, 'Live Anywhere' and more He adds: "I came out of an E3 planning meeting just about an hour ago, and we were looking at some of the plans for the future and things that we might want to tease, and it's very exciting. "There's a lot of stuff on the docket, and maybe we'll break the bank a little bit and talk about things that are further out, which will hopefully get the community excited." Let the random speculation about Xbox 720 and the future of cross-platform mobile-PC-console gaming (the 'Live Anywhere' vision outlined by Bill Gates way back at E3 2006) begin. Ayepecks
I would be absolutely amazed if the next Xbox was announced. It'd be an incredibly stupid move from a business perspective, when the current console has a lot of life left in it -- you'd be sending a message of 'This console is going to be obsolete soon.' Plus anything you announce could be stolen by Sony. Don't see it happening.

Sethos
Plus anything you announce could be stolen by Sony. That will happen no matter what, Sony will release their consoles 2-3 years later plus the seem to like this "Tack on and go" style of business. So if they do spot a great idea, it will probably end up on the "PS4" under any circumstance.

Ayepecks
No, it won't happen no matter what. Microsoft specifically said they want to keep the 360 selling until the PS3 stops selling. If they announce it this early, it's going to be stolen, period. If they make the announcement at the same time, it's unlikely it will be stolen, as they wouldn't have a lot of time to add it on. Sethos
Yeah makes sense not to announce anything now but you shouldn't really doubt Sony's long fingers, have you seen the PS3 this generation and how they keep tacking on features even after released - Some blatantly "borrowed" from Microsoft. Not having these features at launch doesn't seem to bother Sony. So great ideas will get stolen no matter what.
coresx
The only hardware related thing Microsoft will come out with in the next 2 years is a mini Xbox. Looking at the current Jasper board it looks like they aren't bothering do anything major and I suspect they are saving it for a smaller Xbox to be released end of 2009 or more likely sometime in 2010 which will keep them selling well into 2011/2012 when they will announce the third Xbox. I also get the impression that by 'tease', we won't really learn much more than we already know, namely that there is an Xbox720 in the works. Not a big deal, IMO. -Spenser
Corris Veteran Posted December 8, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 8, 2008 Ergh I hope not, Consoles should have atleast a 5 year span before anything about a predecessor is teased/talked about these days. if they announce anything at E3 i might wait till the next one and buy near launch rather than get a 360 at the next chance and within a year it gets shoved behind news and release of the next one. But anyway, its not like the guy even mentioned a next gen console anywhere in what he said from what i can see, its the site that has added it. I hope the 360 and PS3 is still going strong into 2010, i still have not purchased a current gen console, but I would hate to miss out completely on it. However, with technology advancing so quickly, I think consoles will have shorter shelf lives, maybe even 3yrs, and eventually be 'upgradeable' within the next 2 generations. However, with technology advancing so quickly, I think consoles will have shorter shelf lives, maybe even 3yrs, and eventually be 'upgradeable' within the next 2 generations. It should be the other way around now with how future proof these consoles currently are - SOFTWARE updates to them, can just about revitalize the console, to basically being a new console. As seen by NXE, and how the PS3 looks today compared to launch, and the idea that a service like Home can be added on later. For as ****y as the console scene gets about updates, realize how fortunate we are with how expandable these platforms are through software, rather than running around rubbing everyone's eyes with salt as an update came on one later than the other, like it actually downplays the use of the update?! When we bought our consoles we knew we'd be gaming on them for MANY years, not 1 or 2 - Unless you sell through not having an interest anymore obviously. Last generation the PS2 didn't have great online, let alone software updates, so we're in a much better console market right now in that sense (Every platform has a form of updating available, even the Wii) - I know the Xbox 1 did, I'm mentioning the PS2 as the Xbox went out the market due to other circumstances, it had online and software updates spot on. It's the message jumping out with a new console sends to the gamers, not to mention the developers who have to manage between developing on your old console and new. They want to develop for the old as the install base is high, you want them developing on new so the games library gets bulked up and people buy - That isn't an issue if most of the generation is starting to shift, but if you come out earlier than the rest, especially this generation around where multiplatform titles are dominant (wasn't that way last generation), there's risks involved. Announcing the new Xbox next year IMO won't be perceived positively by the media/journalists or many gamers, other than being happy that the idea of an xbox 3 is coming, but that's obvious anyway. If I were MS I'd announce at E3 2010, with intentions to release later in 2011. That'll be 6 years on the market for the Xbox before the next Xbox hits, something easily obtainable due to how future proof current consoles are with updates. If they announce it next year and release in 2010, we'll see how that goes. If they announce it next year and slate 2011 as release, that will be a bad business move IMO. Announce the year before release, not any sooner. Anyway this is crazy speculation, I personally doubt MS will be announcing anything like this at all anyway, I think E3 will be largely games focused for the 360, not hardware (Y)
Ricardo Gil
I like the way they've been announcing things so far. I don't need to know what's coming what might come out in a year or two from now. I just care about the upcoming stuff, 6 months tops. The thing I don't like about Sony's current strategy is announcing things way before time, causing nothing but frustration and sense of failure. If Microsoft starts going that route I'll be extremely disappointed tbh.

Considering Sony is rumored to be gearing up for a 2010 release for the PS4 (which is definitely possible, considering the PS4 is going to be essentially just a beefed up PS3), MS won't be far behind. Considering Sony is rumored to be gearing up for a 2010 release for the PS4 (which is definitely possible, considering the PS4 is going to be essentially just a beefed up PS3), MS won't be far behind. Sony cannot afford to release that early, nor will they want to. They'll be starting to ride pure profit on all PS3s in all regions, and break even in 2009, they are not going to put themselves back under in 2010, or even think about trying to slap together a PS4 announcement for E3 09 when all their efforts need to be on the PS3 right now/next year. Even if MS release 2010, I seriously doubt we'll see a PS4 out around the same time. Whether that's bad or good for Sony, it just won't happen. The PS2 will probably still wheelchair it's way through another year, maybe even 2 years, so there's no way the PS4 is coming in 2010. They've got 3 products on the market, and they'll want those 3 running alongside each other earning profit for as long as possible before that profits wiped clean by a new console. I don't even see an Xbox 3 coming in 2010, I think it might be announced then, but I claim 2011 for the first nex-gen console at earliest. Unless Nintendo kick the bucket and pull the Wii HD out the bag aka super duper overclocked gamecube. If you want my risky prediction, in terms of hardware, maybe expect a MS portable E309, but certainly not a new console.
spenser.d
I don't understand why people assume that them mentioning it at E3 2009 means that they'd plan on releasing it in 2009, or 2010, or perhaps even 2011. All I see it as is something that would be an affirmation that they are working on another console that will come out in the future and that they are dedicated to the Xbox franchise. I mean, he even used the word "tease", which generally relates to something not coming out for a particularly long time. If they first tease the next Xbox at E3 2009, I wouldn't expect it until holiday 2010 at the very earliest, but even that's pushing it. I would personally welcome a bit of teasing about it knowing that my Xbox 360's life isn't nearly over. -Spenser
Elessar
Announcing the next Xbox before 2010 would be pointless. We don't need a new console every 4 years, 5 is pushing it, 6 is ideal. I'll be getting a PS2 next year, along with my 360 i already have...i'm good for at least 3-4 more years.

It sends a message that your console's going to be obsolete, as I said earlier, and would stop certain people from buying. I don't really see them even teasing it to be honest. I'll be getting a PS2 next year, along with my 360 i already have...i'm good for at least 3-4 more years. Well the previous generation ended after only 5 years (was a quite short generation considering the previous were about 7 years), by 2010 the 360 will hit 5 years so it's logical that MS will release Xbox 3 around then. Since the 360 did debut towards the end of 2005, I'd say from late 2010 to 2011 onwards we should expect the successor. That is still around 2 years, which is most likely plenty of time to get the most of the 360 and then once the Xbox 3 releases the 360 will most likely continue much like the PS2 did. Also don't forget MS have been busy working on Xbox 3 since around 2006. Sure I admit I could be totally wrong but I just have a gut feeling about this and I'm sticking to my guns on this one :p
