Microsoft looking to

I hope they don't call it the "xbox 720". sounds like their trying to up the popularity only by the name of it.

I'm wondering if we will see a hybrid ps3/wii/x360, with the best of all worlds :p

The reason why the XBOX pulled out only 4 years in was because it wasn't selling that well and they were still losing money on every hardware sale. They still had XBOX games coming out when the 360 was out, but lets face it, it's just not good business sense to have two products out on the market that aren't selling well AND losing money. So they pulled their oldest one.

With the XBOX 360... I doubt this scenario will be happening come 2009. 360 is still selling loads, they're making money on it, and this will still happen in 2010 and probably 2011 too. There's no hardware that warrants an upgrade, the Tri-Core PPC Architecture of the 360 and the Cell Processor in the PS3 can handle the X86 Quad Cores that the PC gaming industry is only just starting to take advantage of. The Graphics RAM could be a little better, but you know, it seems to be doing well so far. We probably won't see any major advantages until 2011, when we finally have octo-cores or 16-cores at an affordable wholesale price, all running at 4.0Ghz and graphics cards have like 4 or 8GB of RAM in them, with performance 3x as good as the GTX 280. A small upgrade in specs will hardly warrant jump starting a whole new generation.

If they do release it in 2009, it WILL become Microsoft's Dreamcast. All 3 consoles won't slow down, and they all have way too much potential left.

Honestly? I think they're going to be teasing at a Microsoft Handheld.

That we know of, we don't know what MS is planning for Xbox 3. Look at Nintendo, the Wii is hardly next-gen specs wise, but what makes it next-gen is the brand new way of interacting with the system. I don't think the next-gen will be about specs, I think it will be more about how we interact with the games and the system. Well that is what I think anyway.

Maybe in the PC market, but don't forget MS might be able to get their hands on it before PCs do. Consoles are usually bleeding edge when they first come out with technology PCs don't see for at least a year or so (not always I admit and sometimes it's backwards). Also, consoles have less over head then PCs, so even a relatively small upgrade could potentially go a long way. Look at the 360, you'd never run a game at the same visual detail with a PC with the same specs. So basically what I'm trying to say here is even something that might be considered an insignificant upgrade in the PC world, could actually have a larger impact in the console world.
