The more I think about the 360 the more I think it dominates as a term for console gaming much like the term "Playstation" was used during it's time. Xbox has become a household name on its own. I believe it has a stronger presence more than any other console on the market imo.

Always interesting to see how a console started life, before released, the ideas going through peoples heads, I've only seen the first so far. But I would also disagree with you, imo the Wii this generation is currently the most well known out of the three, that is pretty obvious with the huge sales and general marketing, especially in the casual market. And at over 200millions Playstation named consoles out there, I would also say that is one of, if not the biggest console name out there for the line of consoles released so far. Of course a good few people also who Nintendo is in general, and the DS is pretty huge name as well these days.
spenser.d
I disagree about the Wii. Yes it's well known, but I don't think that, when referring to videogames, people use the Wii as reference. I have to agree with the OP. I hear the term Playstation being used as reference to videogame systems less and less and Xbox more and more. The Xbox 360 has a pop culture feel that goes with it and it's making the Xbox franchise huge and much more well-known. Of course our differing opinions might have to do with our differing places of living. The Xbox 360 seems to be holding out as the more popular console in the US whereas in Europe it seems the PS3 is more popular. -Spenser

From my experiences a few others I know it's not a true console for hardcore gamers. Over the years we were casual gamers but the industry grew so vast that we classified ourselfs as hardcore/dedicated entity. Nintendo has failed me with the Wii, it's perhaps the first game console that I own that collects dust the most. Microsoft succeeded my passion for what I wanted to play and how online gaming should function.

Except i still refer to my buttons on my 360 controller as X, Square, Triangle and Circle... I have owned both Xboxes and i still don't know half the time where the A, B, Y keys are (X i got cause its the same as playstation). Oh yeah, i've never owned a play-station other then a PSP... I'm in the same boat as you. I only bought a PSP just to test the custom firmware for genesis, snes for emulation. Most of the time I just press buttons based on colors not letters rofl. On a side note if you look at what MS accomplished compared to others I'd say they were the most successful.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 11, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted December 11, 2008 Interesting watch! And anyone disputing that Nintendo don't have the best marketing/trojan horse in terms of branding with the Wii so far this generation is off their head. Right now neither the Playstation or Xbox household names are standing up to the Wii. The console race is organic though, success one year can be failure next year, failure one year can be success next year, etc, etc. One console can be running 10 years, another 8 years. So things change all the time, trying to tell us right now what the biggest household brand this generation end of, is speculative thinking. Right now though it's undoubtedly the Wii. No chance the Xbox has made more money so far. Seeing as the Wii was "last gen" hardware it probably sold at profit out the door, if not VERY shortly afterwards. MS released the 360 losing money per unit, as is what happens with every cutting edge console. They'll have taken time to break even, then the RROD hit cost them 1 billion. The Wii will be making most money so far this generation as well. I believe financial charts released earlier this year, showed that. MS and Sony were both in debt from their current console offerings.

It simply is a juggernaut compared to Nintendo. All of that is fine in context, but it's speculative. Right now, the Wii is on top. That's all I've been saying. I even said myself earlier how organic the console race is, and how success one year, can turn around the next, or vice-versa. As I said, hands down IMO the Wii is rock bottom in services/games, but I can't deny the current success of it. MS proved how organic the console race is, by coming off the relatively successful, but early exiting Xbox, to the much more successful 360. spenser.d
I remember when Xbox came out and everybody thought it was going to flop :p I certainly did. I was a big Ninty fan then. 6 months later I was an Xbox owner and quick fan because of Halo (I bought my Xbox for Halo and I had never even played Halo, I just heard how fun it was ). -Spenser

Matrix XII
I don't agree with you guys who are saying that the Wii is the biggest household name right now. It might be leading in sales but it seems that a lot of people don't even know how it works or what you actually do in the games. I was just at EB Games the other day and this middle aged guy was going to buy one for his kids but had no clue how it worked (he was ridiculously stupid however) and ended up getting a 360 because he thought it was too complicated. I'm not saying that happens a lot, I just don't think the Wii is doing quite as well as people think. I'd personally like to see the average games per Wii sold, I bet it's WAY under PS3 or 360. For one, there's hardly any good games on the machine, as well as it's staying power is very weak. When I had a Wii people played the Wii sports tennis game all the time, and then the novelty wore off. They wouldn't come over a few months later and wouldn't be like OMG lets play that tennis game again. Instead they'd want to play NHL 09 on PS3 for example, that's a game you can play years down the road, not just for a couple months. I remember with the original Xbox it made a record for most games owned per console, I bet a similar thing has happened with the 360. I was having this discussion with a couple friends a few months ago, and they were arguing how fun the Wii is, and that it is a good console to own. Now I asked them would you still keep it if it was the only console you could have, or would you rather have a 360/PS3? Everyone who actually plays games on a semi-regular basis would say PS3/360 because the Wii isn't a console you own solely, unless you are a casual gamer. Now as far as you people saying the Wii is ahead in household name, perhaps to some, and those are the people who never picked up a controller 3 years ago. Anyways, I believe that Xbox is taking over the household name right now, partly because of sales, but it's doing so well. Xbox LIVE is really driving the 360 to success, and Microsoft has come in from the cold some 8 years ago, and taken Sony back a lot, and Nintendo cant/doesn't compete in the same market even. Everyone will have their own opinion on this matter, but personally I believe the 360 is the biggest household name right now.
neoadorable
thanks for the thread, always nice to learn more of the backstory behind things. not wanting to get into bickersome territory, but it's true that "360" has become synonymous (spl?) with gaming in North America, although of course there are those that would dispute it. in my family it's "i been on the box all night!" or to that effect and the message is understood. isn't it funny how easily people can be swayed? six years ago i'd have laughed you out of the room for telling me one day i'll be gaming exclusively on an Xbox. afusion
^np dude Time is a truthful teacher. Right around Jr. High I was hearing so much BS about the Xbox flopping as Spencer mentioned. I wasn't sure about why they were hating on it. Perhaps it was new and it was from Microsoft (assuming they didn't like MS) Microsoft has done something very brilliant with the gaming industry itself. It almost gaped a few holes that most hardware companies struggle with over time, their marketing strategy and delivery upon their Xbox Live Service and the XNA platform has brought a community religiously developing & playing on it. It makes me think about Sony allot when I see Microsoft's success. I ask "How will the PS4 approach this?"
ienhz
I thought the Xbox was stupid when it was first announced... lol. Back then I was a huge Sony guy. And yeah, I do think XBox is slowly taking over as the "generic" name for video games now. I remember the "Aquaman" video game in Entourage was in a 360 case and Bob Saget asking if any of them were an "xbox guy" LOL
