Right-click options

Recommended Posts

I just upgraded from XP and I must say I'm liking Vista so far. But there are some things I'm missing that I hope I can reproduce in Vista.

First, in XP I had it where I could right-click on My Computer and along with all the other options it would give me more options like going to Add/Remove Programs, Shutdown, Restart, and a few others. Then in the right-click menu on the desk top, I had a Show/Hide Hidden Files, and Show/Hide File Extensions toggles.

Is there any way to reproduce this in Vista?

Those features where in Windows XP? Maybe you mean under the Properties button of the right click?

Nono, I guess I should explain further, I had them added in a customized version of XP. Slip streamed into the install I guess? At any rate they weren't default. I had to do the customizations. I was just wondering if there was a way to do that in Vista too.

The My Computer ones don't concern me overly much, but the show/hide hidden files and show/hide file extensions ones were mighty useful.

Edit: I'm using the 64-bit version of Vista, I don't know if that matters or not.

I found this page that I think has what I'm looking for but the first one didn't work. It said something about the regserv not being the correct version.

If I understand you correctly you are looking for this...

Go:

Start -> Control Panel -> "Classic View" -> Folder Options -> View ->

The hidden folders is the first branch (folder) under the main folder "Files and folders." And the hide extensions is the first checkmark under that.

Hopefully thats what your lookin for.

I think what he is looking for is a quicker way to do that. A way to right click in an Explorer window or on the desktop and have the option right there to adjust on the fly. I don't have any idea how to do it, but I am interested in it as well.

Yeah, exactly. I'm looking for a way to have those toggles in the right-click menu when I right-click on the desktop or inside of a folder, not on any particular item, just at a blank spot if that makes sense... The ones in that link didn't work for me, but maybe because I'm using the 64-bit version of Vista?

It's irritating to have to go through all those folders whenever I want to see file extensions or hidden folders.

Check out this thread, towards the bottom of the first post by Herby.

- Show/Hide System Files Context Menu Item (Works on 32/64-bit)

This is a great tweak, although it's different than what you're used to with XP. It requires you to hold down the shift key while right-clicking to view the context item, but you get an automatic refresh of the current directory to show hidden/system files.

- Show/Hide File Extensions Context Menu Item (32-bit only)
