Xbox 360 Surround Sound on a Budget

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I could use some suggestions on a Surround Sound system that would be able to hook up to an Xbox 360 (via Optical maybe?) for a Christmas gift for my cousin. I'm looking at around $150 price range or so.

There are a lot of PC-specific sound systems well within that range, but I'm not sure if any would be able to hook up to the Xbox 360 alone? His 360 is currently hooked up to his 40" LCD and I thought it would be something he'd really enjoy.

Thanks in advance :D

You could get some surround sound headphones which work great (as long as you adjust the delays well) Tritton AX360s are great (I have these), and hook up by optical. The UK version of these are the Sharkoon X-tactic IIs.

They're also a LOT better than a real surround sound system for hearing in game sounds and positioning them realistically around you so that you can react before the enemy is even on your screen (i.e. soundwhoring.)

I highly recommend the Logitech X-530. It cost me ?65 a couple of years ago. You could probably get a set for about $100 over there. The sound quality is great, and the bass is terrific! They're also easy to mount if you've got a place to hang the speakers on!:DD

The X-530's don't have optical though, so no surround sound.:((

I have some Z5500's and they're quite awesome.:))

They're not surround sound?! Then they do a good job of pretending to be one!

Are you sure they aren't? I've got a full-on home cinema sound setup down in the living room. Cost a good few hundred quid, is a 400W system, and that doesn't have an optical input.

They're 5.1 analog speakers, the 360 only puts out surround sound via Optical, so you'll only get 2.1 with them. Unless I'm mistaken and they've changed the speakers since I bought mine. :s

I found an old 5.1 system on ebay for about ?70, it had optical and coax-in and decoded dolby signals, did me fine until I upgraded to my current system (Which was an absolute bargain - ?250 for a 900w+ Sony system, HDMI-audio, speakers, the works).

I have these and while they are not 100% true 5.1 they are the best $90 I have spent http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers...34&cl=us,en I bought mine at Sam's Club...

I actually picked that up today. It was at Office Depot, and the funny thing is, that the store was closing, so everything was on clearance. I got it 20% off.

I just got this nice Onkyo set that was originally $300 for $140 (refurbished). The quality of it is just as good as if it was new! I have had it for about a week and I am just blown away. I never knew games were supposed to sound this amazing.

Where did you pick that up refurbished? That's a perfect price point for me.

Through their website and a Thanksgiving deal. Obviously you won't be able to get the Thanksgiving deal (I think it was like 10%-15% off) but if you just signup and register an account with their site, you get "10 points" which equals 10 dollars off. So you should be around the $170-$180 area.
