Selecting the Edge

The first step to be carried out on the Alpha channel is to define the edge limits. This step mainly makes use of the Clouds filter.

Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and apply this blur with a Radius value of 15.

Select Filter > Render > Clouds.

Select Filter > Fade Clouds. Apply this filter with an Opacity of 40% and in Normal Mode.

Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, with a Radius of 4.

Select Image > Adjust > Levels and gather the levels together towards the centre of the histogram.

The adjustments to the contrast levels actually define the edge and eliminate any unwanted grey pixels. In our example, we chose input levels of 119, 1 and 139.

Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with a Radius of 15.

Select Filter > Fade Gaussian Blur. Apply this filter with an Opacity of 100% and Mode set to Lighten.
