Apple Apple Apple Apple.....MAC!

Recommended Posts

It seems that all I see today on Neowin is news about Apple. Sure, you scroll down a bit you might find something about Windows or Microsoft on the front page, but recently the only things to make the Neowin headline (the top article) is all about Apple. We're getting more coverage of unimportant Apple news than we are about Microsoft and their latest efforts on Windows Seven, while most Windows is getting left to the forums. I can remember on several occasions coming across forum news articles that are more than news-page-worthy. Meanwhile, the main page is getting spammed with MacWorld and Mac Mini and whatnot.

Oh and what is this? The article titled "Apple Mac sales slow in November, Microsoft Windows Rises" is posted under Mac, when it is obvious the title states that Microsoft Windows is Rising. Maybe it's just me, but Neowin seems like it's going increasingly Apple. I don't necessarily think this is good, observing that >90% of the world uses Windows at the moment. This might be a bit far-going or just of chance, but I have also recently observed that only about one in 25 refreshes does the 24/7 Tech Support mini banner shows up, while the Neowin does Macs too banner shows about 75% of the time to me.

Another thing I recall was one of the mods or devs saying something about purposely putting Apple on the top of the drop down menu because of their personal opinion on Apple. No, I am not making an accusation to anyone in particular, and my memory may be wrong, but I am pretty sure I recall reading something like this in one of those old Neowin 5 threads.

I still love Neowin like always, but I am concerned about the lack of coverage on the "other" side of the computer industry.

And as a side comment, I'd like to add that I would love to see more news about the (computer) hardware world on Neowin, instead of the usual PC vs Mac vs Linux and micro devices (cellphones) news.

Thankyou.

Just food for thought, because almost 90% of the dev team are mac users ;)

Neowin isn't close minded about operating systems, are respect the major 3.

A better title would of been Orange, Orange, Orange, Apple, Banana

I don't think as many people 'Switch' to mac as people think. They are probably just adding a mac to their collection of PCs.

I guess that's a whole other can of worms though.

Times may be changing.

This is still a very Windows-centric site, however. The vocal Mac posters are still far outnumbered around here. We try to present an opposing view for everyone to chew on. The nice thing is that we get a lot of very lively debates as a result - both sides contribute, and we get some very passionate and controversial responses. And at length. That's always good and keeps a site like Neowin right on the bleeding edge of the issues. That prevents the site from getting boring. And some of the comments and (hopefully more often than not, research) that go into these debates results in education about the issues being discussed.

The Apple/MS debate has always been popular, and no matter what Mozilla releases or what new features are in Ubuntu, the platform wars are timeless. They will naturally get a lot of attention.

Plus, I think Neowin, as a historically Windows-centric site, is trying to be more inclusive - the results of which are a much more robust Apple and Linux community. It's paid off.

Alas it's true, There's only a couple of us sane people left, myself and I believe FlishFun.

That being said, most of the devs either run Boot Camp or have a PC. But most of us are avid Mac users, and Dave would be too if he gave Coda a try :p

I'm going to start a "Mac for Dave" fund... just to see how you'd react.

On topic, I think there's still a lot more Windows stuff than Mac going on around the site. The news is mostly Windows or other tech focused, with the occasional Apple story. And the forums... well, that's user run. If there's more Mac than Windows, then there's more active Mac users than Windows users.

I remember either reading or saying that, but I guarantee you, as someone who spent a lot of time working on Neowin 5, that it wasn't serious.

Linux and Open Source is also changing with the times. With the recession already upon us, we might see a rise in Linux users - that is, users looking for viable, more cost-effective alternatives to OS X and Windows.

And you can't deny that Ubuntu in particular has done a lot for Linux.

The Linux community around here might see some amazing growth over the next 12 months.

Go, talk about -mac users on a -win forum when that same -win forum develop itself a -nux software....

Seriously, it's clear that Neowin isn't all about Windows, by the way, Neo-win mean the new Windows and at that time it was about Windows XP the NEW! Windows...

There has been a lot more happening in the Mac world than in the Windows world lately. I'm sure things'll balance themselves out a bit more when the Windows 7 beta really gets underway - Snow Leopard won't have a public beta so there won't be many posts on that.

As far as I have been a member, Neowin has never really been a Windows only website. Even though the name suggests otherwise, Neowin has always seem to have been an open-minded place for Mac, Windows and even Linux enthusiasts.

To be honest, Neowin is the reason my new computer is a Mac :D

First off, I think Tom Warren would disagree with you there. He's provided an extreme amount of coverage and exclusives regarding Windows 7.

And if you do find an interesting article, what's stopping you from submitting it to the front page yourself? ;)

I think neowin has always been pretty open about other OSes and that's a good thing.

As for myself I always used Windows as my main OS until I got a mac mini (got one as soon as they were announced) and then I found myself never using my pc so I decided to sell it along with my mac mini and buy a powermac. Unfortunately after I got the powermac I had some regrets (price wise, not the OS) so I sold it and built another PC....which I used for a bit until I could get a macbook pro (got it as soon as they were announced too) which I used until a year ago when I sold it to buy a TV (and I also had built another PC which I barely used). After I sold my macbook pro i went back and forth between XP and Vista untill I decided to give OSx86 another chance. In sept I finally decided to get another macbook pro (got a great deal on it, just over $1400 including taxes and everything (brand new)).

I love my macbook pro and I can see myself using OSX for the next few years for sure. On my PC I dumped OSx86 (since i barely use my pc anymore, I use it as a server really) and install Ubuntu which is running great (my only problem with it is with VMware, it seems very slow at resuming a suspended VM compared to the Windows or Mac version....). I might go back to XP or Vista because of that unfortunately :( (and the lack of itunes for Linux)

i think it's just you, i don't see a big movement going towards apple other than the iphone.

i actually see more of an expressed interest in people wanting to try out linux.
