Orange Box vs GTA IV?

Recommended Posts

Winter break is almost upon us, and I'm looking for something to keep me entertained. I played a bit of the original HL2 on the PC back in 06' but never got around to finish it (most likely because I got addicted to CS:S). Being as I hate gaming on the PC now, I kind of want to buy a newish 360 game.

Which is the better of the two?

I highly recommend finishing the Half Life games and portal is fantastic but don't pick The Orange Box up for tf2 as it is a very different experience on the 360. On the other hand GTA is also great. Such a tough choice, you should play both eventually. For me the main draw of the orange box was all the Half Life games but it sounds like you may not have enjoyed HL2 as much as I did. If you're not interested in Half Life I would get GTA, just be sure to finish half life in time for the release of episode 3.

I didn't enjoy GTAIV very much, I'd go with Orange Box.

There's so much replayability with that bundle, I don't prefer TF2 myself, but the rest of the games make up for it.

And I'm the exact opposite. I thought that portal was a nice novelty, and TF2 was fun for about 20 minutes. I'd personally go for GTA 4.

If you get GTAIV on 360 it's fine, but I got it on PS3 and it's so blurry and choppy it actually made me feel sick after 30-40 minutes, so I couldn't really play it.

I played the 360 version at my friends place and it's no where near as blurry and I didn't feel motion sick from it.

I've never had that from a game before, it's kinda weird.

Overall value right now, I'd say Orange Box, but my favorite game is GTA IV. Orange Box should only be $20ish on eBay right now, and GTA IV around $30 - why not grab both? :D

For the pc it has to be Orange Box, for the Xbox 360 GTA4.

GTA4 is crap on the pc, many problems with frame rates and texture issues, while the Orange Box plays well with older systems. I haven't seen the Xbox 360 version of GTA4 live, but the screens I've seen make my pc cry. I've got a Vista box HP a6010n with a 4300 1.8ghz c2d, 2 gigs of ram and an 8800gt, not a great gaming system, but it still plays most games at 1440x900 (HP w 1907) on pretty good settings, but GTA4 chugs and looks not so good.

The Orange Box. I have yet to play a Valve game that wasn't a quality product, and I've loved all their games from Half-Life 2 on. Supposedly they'll update TF2 in TOB for the 360 soon, which may bring some life back into the online portion, but we'll see.

GTA IV is a good game, but I personally think it becomes a little bit redundant, and once I was done with it nothing kept me coming back. If you love the GTA series, though, I'm sure you'll love GTA IV. Multiplayer (IMO) is not that great, so I don't think that really makes it any better than TOB.

I love Valve games and the TOB but they killed TF2 on Xbox 360. Thats why I'm not going to buy their multiplayer game on X306 ever again. They were tesating the ground to see how multplayer works on LIVE, and they FAILED big time, I was so into TF2 on Xbox last year but the lag, glitches, exploits and the lack of any support from Valve killed the whole experience. These developers should stop thinking for xbox as a pc system, people do not care if they can host a game or not they just want to play. MS should require the publishers to install dedicated servers.

I'll start off by saying that I have owned TOB for the PC for over a year now, and I just started playing it for the 360 yesterday afternoon.

I picked up the TOB for the 360 a week ago for $20 at Wal-Mart (split it with a friend, also it's $20 everywhere else too). The PC version of TF2 is far better, especially with the updates they've released that make an already great game even better. I enjoyed playing on the 360 and even though I hadn't played the game for months on the PC prior to this, I was still able to work my way to the top of my team, but I definitely missed the little updates, like not having to hold the trigger to constantly heal a teammate as a Medic. The good thing is that Valve is going to release these updates to the 360 soon, which will improve it a lot. I had no trouble finding a server to play on with plenty of people on the servers, and as usual, I had to deal with people who had no clue how to strategize in the game, a problem that is present in the PC version as well.

Portal is enjoyable and doable on the 360, but my only gripe is that you simply can't do with a controller what you can do with a keyboard and mouse. After beating Portal, six of the chapters have advanced and challenge modes. The advanced versions of the maps are doable, but the challenges, especially if you're going for gold, are much more difficult to impossible. You can look up some videos on YouTube to see people completing chapters in a matter of seconds or having perfect accuracy to get where they need to go, then you can imagine yourself attempting this with a controller. Some are too fast and accurate, leading me to believe they used the game's developer console and have some kind of hack or script that makes the player do all of the motions to computer simulated perfection.

Then there's Half-Life 2 and its two episode sequels. Three great games that will not disappoint, especially Episode Two.

All of that for the low price of $20. Hours and hours of fun, and if you like TF2, potentially hundreds of hours (I put in almost 160 with one of the nine characters alone on the PC).

With that said, I've never played GTA IV, so I can't say it's great or bad, but I will point out that I have had several friends who picked it up, only to stop playing after a week or so. If you like the GTA series, you'll probably like it.

Get Orange Box, while I never finished HL1 or 2, and just recently got TF2 (thx to 10usd weekend deal), GTA4 is just a mess at this point and since Rockstar already busy announcing a DS version and DLC for xbox360, I don't believe issues will ever be fixed.

Orange Box, better value and better games.

Valve wants to support the 360, but MS wants Valve to charge for each update, so Valve are holding off on updating it so that when it's released, the update will be worth the money MS want.

Don't blame Valve, blame MS.

Valve said they are gonna release a huge update to TF2 on the 360 sometime soon, and the way that it was worded it would be free (don't quote me on that though, heh).

So, I would def. get The Orange Box. As others have said, HL2 and the episodes, Portal and TF2 are amazing games. And now that Valve is gonna give the 360 crowd most if not all of the content so far released for TF2 on the PC, it'll be worth playing as well. I don't know how good the game plays online (network code wise) but I'm sure it's just as good as it's PC counterpart more or less.

GTA4 is an awesome game as well, but aside from multiplayer, I'm not sure how much you will get out of it compared to the endless fun of TF2's online play and Portal's devious puzzles.

You need to play the Orange Box on PC.. so GTA4. Don't get me wrong, I have about 500 hours in TF2 alone, but I doubt it would be the same amount of fun on the 360. :)

Can I be a bit off topic and suggest Crackdown if you haven?t played that? You might find it a whole lot more fun compared to GTA 4.

I'm playing GTA4 now on PC and its great :D Graphics are all maxed out except for one option and it plays great, haven't encountered any bugs yet apart from the crappy shadows which you tend to ignore anyway.

probably because of the heavy blur filter the game uses.
