VLC 0.9 in FC6?

Recommended Posts

Well, did you visit the VLC website?

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

Older version of Fedora are not supported anymore by the Fedora Project (even for security bugfix).

BUT, you can find VLC 0.8.6 for all the other flavours of fedora

If you need the newest VLC, you might want to update your Fedora once in a while ;) Your version 6 is not even supported for security bug fixes any more!

i did visit the site.. but when i check for updates through VLC itself it sends me the source for 0.9 so i was wondering whether its possible to sorta compile it and install it..

the reason I can't upgrade from FC6 is cuz its my office PC.. we have to use FC6 :(

Ouch. Your IT department really sucks, man, if they have you use internet-connected PCs that are not supported for security fixes.

It might compile. But if it were that simple, someone, somewhere would have an easy RPM for it, I would think. That leads me to believe that the 0.9 sources may depend on some newer libraries. And, if things get really hairy, those libraries or such may also depend on a more recent gcc version, which means you might need to start changing the development foundation of your Fedora box. Not sure your business would appreciate you mucking around with that, especially if it breaks something.

You can always try the compile, first, and see where that leads to. Then, like Alice, you must decide for yourself if you want to follow that white rabbit down the hole to see how deep it goes...
