Kid Shoots Parents for Taking Away His Copy of Halo 3

Recommended Posts

An Ohio teenager stands accused of killing his mother and injuring his father because he was not allowed to play Halo 3. The trial, on charges of murder and attempted murder, opened this week in the town of Elyria, Ohio.

In September 2007, Daniel Petric, who was 16 at that time, purchased a copy of Halo 3 against his father's orders. His parents caught him playing the game and took it away from him. Almost a month later, on October 20, 2007, Daniel used his father's key to open a safe box where he knew he'd find the game and a 9mm handgun.

Soon after, Daniel asked his parents to close their eyes for a "surprise" and then shot both parents in the head, prosecutors said. Daniel Petric's mother, Susan, 43, was killed. His father, Mark Petric, survived because Daniel's sister and her husband arrived at the scene after the shooting.

Mark Petric, a co-pastor with his wife of New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, Ohio, said his son tried to make the whole thing a a murder-suicide. Prosecutors say Daniel has confessed he planned the shooting. As Mr. Petric lay wounded, Daniel tried to place the gun in his father's hand. Then Daniel told police when they arrested him that his father had shot his mother.

So he barely got to play the game? Congrats.

Kids these days, sure he must have had mental issues himself to even consider killing his parents but come on, if parents say no then they mean no!

I believe there is a thread for this when it originally happened unles it has been purged. Its very sad. I am sure some how this will get blamed on the Xbox and not on the parenting skills or self responsibility. The degradation of our society continues.

Yes, until it happens to you or a family member!

The fact of the matter is that the game was just an excuse, if it wasn?t that it would have been something else! The kids reaction is indicative of what's wrong in many, if not most, societies nowadays! Some of the replies here are also indicative of this sickness that we have in modern society!

Replies like this crack me up. Modern society is sooooo terrible. I'm sure people said the same thing when Lizzie Borden killed her parents with an axe.

Society is no worse now than it ever has been. Only difference is we're deluged with bad news, such as this, all day, every day. The media conglomerates thrive on crap like this, because it stirs up the beehive, and that continues until the next tragedy. 25 years ago, we'd probably never have even heard of this kid, but through the wonders of modern technology, we can all share in the fact that a kid, probably crazy or in some way emotionally disturbed, attacked his parents with a firearm, because he couldn't play a game.

Yes, it's horrible. Yes, right now, I feel for the family. But I probably won't remember this past lunch, and neither will most of you. I'm sure we'll all have something new to get our undies in a twist over.

I will disagree with that. How many school massacres were there 50 years ago? Or drive-by shootings?

So, these things aren't increasing, just getting reported more?

It's all relative. If there are 1,000 less random murders this year than there were last year, yet two more school shootings where 6 kids were killed each...is society better or worse? As a whole I think societies are getting better. I'm not saying these occurrences aren't horrible, they are.

I mean, do you honestly think things now are worse than they were during the 1800s? Do you honestly think bad news doesn't get better ratings than good news?

Back in the 1800's there was a huge serial murderer taking in all the media attention. The crimes were grotesque and continued over several years.

Jack the Ripper killed anywhere from 5 to 9-ish people, depending on the source and degree of speculation.

Incidents like Columbine and Virgina Tech put his (at the time) astonishing numbers to shame.

Yes. Society is more murderous and has the tools to do it more efficiently readily available. Do we need to bring in the "terrorist" acts like the Tokyo Subway sarin gas? or Bali Bombings?

Is your stance that this scale of murderous events existed back then?

Yes, overall, there is more destruction and murder. While bad news gets more ratings than good news, the same applied back then, don't you think? Or are you saying that only NOW does bad news count for more attention?

I don't have a "stance". This isn't an argument. I think society isn't as bad as it's made out in the current media. You think it is. These are our opinions. We disagree. End. You want to argue, go find someone that wants to play with you, because that person isn't me.

Just for the record, I said it was worse now than before. It was a direct contradiction to your post that "Society is no worse now than it ever has been."

I did not state that "society is as bad as made out in current media". YOU stated that was my opinion. It is not. I agree that bad news is more presented in the media than good news. Feel free to discuss with me, but don't change my position stating that "You think it is" when I don't.

Wow. Just...wow. I wouldn't dream of changing your position or stance on anything Mark. I'm just glad I'm not getting all butt-hurt over comments made in the Gaming section of a tech news site about a kid murdering his parents over Halo. You KNOW you are right! Don't think it, KNOW IT!

You must be super fun at parties. Go you! (Y)

Hilarious.

Probably the reason this happened has to do something with his dad's religious purposes. "Son, this game is not good. Think of how others will react to this when they find out a pastor's son is killing machine on halo 3?"

Hmm?

"butt hurt"? Not familiar with that expression. Haven't heard my kids use it, but I assume you mean offended in some way.

I don't mind discussing or debating. But I really find it annoying (that is different from anger or any sort of pain in my arse) when people don't read what I said, then reply that I stated something different - something I clearly did not state.

You didn't have to "dream" it, you "did" it. We can agree to disagree, just do so without posting that I stated something I did not.

Yes Mark. You're right, Mark. What was I thinking, Mark? Won't happen again, Mark. You like being pedantic and arguing semantics over trivial postings on a web forum, and apparently lack the ability to infer things from a statement. I will commit such to memory and make the effort to not post in error in reference to you again.

We done now?
