markwolfe Veteran Posted December 19, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 19, 2008 It never actually says that he shot them because they took his game away. He could be crazy, couldhave been abused etc. Blame it on Halo 3 nice. That report doesn't, really. It says that he grabbed his father's key and opened the safe to get the gun and the game. And that he shot them that same day, the 20th. Then, look at other news sources and see more of the story. Defense attorney James Kersey called Petric a "typical 16-year-old" who became obsessed with the Halo video games, which he played 18 hours a day when given the chance.Kersey did not deny that Petric shot his parents but said he did not plan it. He said the boy "just popped" the day he killed his mother and shot his father. Assistant County Prosecutor Anthony Cillo described Petric as a cold, calculating killer who admitted planning to kill his parents and make it appear to be a murder-suicide. Cillo referred to a report produced by the defense, but not read in open court, in which juvenile psychologist Steven Neuhaus said Petric revealed that he had planned the murders for a week. "He built the plan around the arrival of his sister and her husband at 9 p.m.," Cillo said. "They were coming to the house to watch the Indians game. He had planned for them to find the bodies. But when Heidi showed up two hours early, she interfered with the plan." Petric's sister Heidi Archer and her husband, Andrew Archer, testified they arrived early at 7 p.m. and Petric would not let them inside the home. He said the parents had been arguing and that his sister and her husband should leave. The two forced their way inside after hearing Mark Petric groan and found the mother dead and the father gravely wounded. Kersey insisted the boy's youth and video-game addiction made him less responsible. He noted that the boy's addiction was so strong that he took the Halo game with him when he fled the grisly scene. But Kersey did not introduce any experts to testify about addictive or desensitizing effects of video games. You can see that the boy is obsessed with the game to an unhealthy extent. Grabbing the game and running off with it for his attempt to escape.
Raa
I didn't miss it. However, there is nothing wrong with a preacher having a gun. Heck, I know a preacher that rode a Harley. They aren't all stuffy wishy-washy people. He may have had it because he was a collector or enjoyed target shooting. Maybe home protection, if there were threats on his life, or that of his family.I really don't see the issue with him owning a gun just because he is a preacher. I'm in agreement with you for the most part, but I just don't usually associate "Preachers" with "Gun Owners". Maybe that's just me though :)

chrisj1968
What is happening is, the character of people is falling. People have no consideration of others, as is the case with this kid and the halo 3 game. We are soo swept up with selfish people who gotta have stuff NOW that, it tends to obscure peoples better judgement Someone here in this thread made a comment like"Ii don't care, I do what I want". THAT is the problem. People have little or no self control anymore. Now, murder has been happening for ages but, look how fickle the reasons are, take a life for $40 in cash or a Game called Halo 3. Society is getting worse but the News being more accessible, helps us to see how depraved we REALLY are.

Society is getting worse but the News being more accessible, helps us to see how depraved we REALLY are. Because people only became selfish and greedy in this day and age, right? People have been killing over land, control, possessions, etc. for a very long time. Let's not forget how many wars have been fought simply over having faith in the wrong religion, as well as the continuous killing that occurs out of it. Also, even thousands of years ago, slavery was very well in alive. People were still very much being abused. At least in much of today, there is a lot less racism. Not non-existent by far, but a lot less today than there was a long time ago. Does that carry no significance? I think many of us see what's going on in the world, and are disgusted. I can't blame anyone for feeling that way either, but I don't think it's any different than it has been. It's just more in our face rather, and becoming harder to ignore. As for this kid, I agree with the rest. I wouldn't doubt he'd have been set off by something else just the same.
Emn1ty
If it was the game that caused it, I doubt the kid would have waited a month to kill his parents. The real question here is how the hell did he get keys to the safe? And why wasn't the safe locked via combination as well?
BoJo
Yes Mark. You're right, Mark. What was I thinking, Mark? Won't happen again, Mark. You like being pedantic and arguing semantics over trivial postings on a web forum, and apparently lack the ability to infer things from a statement. I will commit such to memory and make the effort to not post in error in reference to you again. We done now? If ever I've seen "butt-hurt" this is it :p
DanManIt
**** that place is really close to me! I see it as he probably would have shot them at one time or another. This was just the first thing to finally set him off.
