Xbox live through Internet Connection Sharing?

Recommended Posts

A friend of my told me about his interesting situation at his house. They don't have a dedicated phone line (all cell phones), so they can't have DSL. He just got this thing from Alltel the other day, one of those things that looks like a usb thumb drive, but gives you internet. He used ICS on his laptop and plugged ethernet into that and then into the Xbox.

He has been trying to play COD4 but he gets nothing other than 1 red bar or 2 yellow bars. I told him I didn't think there was anyway to fix that because of his setup, but I thought I would ask here. Does he have to go through his computer in the first place could he just plug that usb drive right into his 360?

I know he said his download speed was around 126kb/s but I just didn't think no matter what he does, it would work for XBL. Any thoughts? Also, should this possibly be in the Internet/Network forum instead?

i doubt plugging that USB device will be detected by his xbox if plugged in directly. wouldn't hurt to try.

I have used ICS to a laptop's wireless connection before for xbl and worked fine (albeit with a normal dsl connection). the marketplace/downloading DLC/updates don't seem to work anymore after the NXE update though :p

Can't he ask his local DSL providers about Dry DSL (DSL without an active phone line)? or do you mean he physically doesn't have phone lines in his house?

Even if he goes to the next data plan up to increase speeds? Just trying to think of any questions he would ask when I get back to him. Any ideas for him in his situation?

Edit: Never heard of Dry DSL before, but it wouldn't hurt to have him ask.

That dry DSL might be just what he needs. I sent him this link and I told him to call up Windstream. From the way that it sounds he would be getting normal DSL speeds right? I just don't want him to get suckered into this plan and have crappy speeds for Xbox Live.

So he can get on Xbox Live fine using ICS right? His games are just laggy?

If so it sounds like his upload speed might be a bit limited or his usb 3g modem is getting a poor signal there for he?s getting a bad connection in games.

I have a friend who did this at university last year and he could play perfectly fine online, you get an instant 100ms ping added for the time it takes your 3g modem to communicate with the phone mast but games should still be perfectly playable.

Yes so I am currently still waiting to hear back from him regarding Windstream's GreenStreak "dry DSL" or whatever.
