Web Site with Ftp access...

Question

well.. first...i dont know much at all about web design or anything.. but i have to select the right provider and know what is possible before i tell my designer what i want. he is not the most experience designer but if i tell him what i want and that it can be done. he will get it done.

soo....anyway... i have a printing company.. and i want to provide a place for people to check their business specific files.. and also upload the same. sooo... i will need some kind of password protection for users i would imagine... and i would need a way they could click on their proof and view it / download it.... also a way for them to upload a file so that we can use it.... ideally... we would want them to be able to do it very easily for the web... as most clients wont be extremely computer literate...

if anyone could point me in the right direction...or tell me a specific solution that would be a good choice for me that would be EXTREMELY appreciated!!

if you are going with Windows/ColdFusion, www.crystaltech.com is a great host. I wouldn't worry about FTP access. If you correct in saying that clients are computer literate, FTP would be a problem (from my point of view). The designer should be able to handle everything via the http/https.

Well personally I would get a host with PHP and MysQL Database, you would need some kind of database to hold customer information, you could then set about designing your own PHP script to interact across the web with customers and yourself.

For a host try :

Neowins host : Invision

or

My Host : One and One

I hope that helps.

Kind regards

thanks for the help people. btw.. a friend also pointed me to invision.. that file manager is absolutely perfect!! the only thing i could possibly ask for is that it allows the users to create the accounts themselves... although i see the risk there

thanks again..
