Grand Maester
I find the 7-day pruning rule bothersome. There are some topics that aren't updated regularly, (like the FAQ) but that I would still like to track. Sometimes I'd also just like to keep an old topic there for quick reference so I don't have to go back through all my old posts to find it. I know you could just bookmark them but I don't see why we can't just keep them in the subscriptions window. IPB's own forum has pruning disabled so why does Neowin have to do it? I should also point out that forum subscriptions aren't pruned. While most forums have a new post at least once every seven days anyway, I'm pretty sure there are at least a couple that don't. I started a previous thread about this and one of the responses suggested I take a poll to see just how many people agree with me. I've had it indicated to me that the staff doesn't think too many members have a problem with it so I'm hoping to prove them wrong. Also, anyone else who has particular gripes about the pruning rule, please post them. Disclaimer: I have reread the community rules and, at least the way I interpret them, I am within my rights as a member here. I know there's a rule against questioning rulings by moderators publicly (which I think is perfectly reasonable), but the way I read it, that applies to moderation of discussion and not questions regarding decisions made on the functionality of Neowin. If that's not the case I am prepared to acquiesce in a contrary ruling by an appropriate staffer, no violation is at all intended. kylejn
Is this for subscribing to threads? I've never done so, so I suppose the pruning rule doesn't really apply to me. Still, if I started subscribing to threads, I think it'd be pretty annoying to have those subscriptions removed after seven days of inactivity in a thread to which I subscribed. Grand Maester
Is this for subscribing to threads? That is correct.
MasterC
I don't subscribe to threads so the rule doesn't apply to me, but I just think it's funny how all of a sudden you come out of hibernation and try to change Neowin to suit you. ;)
Grand Maester
I don't subscribe to threads so the rule doesn't apply to me, but I just think it's funny how all of a sudden you come out of hibernation and try to change Neowin to suit you. ;) What can I say, I've never been one to not voice my opinion, it's probably why at least one of the supervisors doesn't seem to particularly like me. I should point out though, that my end goal isn't really to get it to suit me (although that might be an unintended benefit), it's to make the site easier to use and more functional. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I sincerely doubt anybody can tell me they don't want Neowin to be the best it can be. In the end I'm simply putting my suggestions out there, what the powers that be ultimately decide to do with them (if anything), is up to them. Rob Veteran Posted December 22, 2008 Veteran Share Posted December 22, 2008 No need for lengthy disclaimers and justifications - feel free to suggest all you want, no one will resent you for that. This said, your initial post states you're doing it to 'prove the staff wrong', which isn't a good aim. We're happy to look into all suggestions, but in the end we as a staff group have a greater understanding of the impact of these kind of changes; a vocal subset of people wanting something doesn't necessarily make it beneficial to Neowin as a whole, and we have to evaluate that. I'd welcome thoughts from others in the community about your request however, which this post doesn't specifically address. I was making a generic statement. But do it in the existing thread - poll responses aren't going to change things as stated, so stick to one thread to keep the discussion contiguous. Thread closed.
