RatherLargeBear
There was a time when I started my 360, jumped online, and messaged a friend to get out of Gears and pop in Halo. He would be greeted by the other people in our party ready to bull**** and kick ass while doing so. With the uprising of the Xbox Live Party Chat, those friends are leaving me with the choice of talking with them or trying to enjoy my game. Initially I think that chatting with people who aren?t playing the same game as me would be quite asinine, and it is, but I still found myself doing it up until recently, now I tend to deny party invites. Sure, it may seem like I?m being a dick, but when I throw in Call of Duty, that is what I want to play and be focused on. I have no doubts that there was some great events going on at school or work, but can?t we discuss that as we throw grenades together? This problem goes further than just ****ing some people off on my friends list, it is now becoming an exploit of sorts in current games. I would like to say it is cheating, but I can?t really blame someone for finding a way to beat the system. When playing certain modes in CoD4 for instance, there are gametypes (Search & Destroy) where the dead could not converse with the living, and for good reasons. When you are dead in the game, you get to view the living teammates screens. A neat feature, nothing new to a lot of gamers, but the point is, you wouldn?t be able to alert others of that enemy disabling that bomb or etc. More at source
Sethos
Yeah, the ghosting is really bad in games like Call of Duty. It's so obvious when you see an entire clan pulling off some incredible kills and just knowing where everyone is - Really ****ing me off.

HawkMan
WTF it used to be great because he could log in and bug his matest to join him in his chosen game and talk about other crap now it's TEH D00M because, people are bugging him to join their games and not bothering to join his game while talking about other crap.... seriously.... the only valid point is the dead man speaking, wich on an integrated system like the xbox is actually fixable, but in the end pointless, as they just cirumvent it other ways, usually with a laptop and vent if they really care that much about it. but it's perfectly possible in at least future games(or in game updates) to detect peopel in a group is playing the same game, and mute the dead player, even in justcertain game types where it matters. It's so obvious when you see an entire clan pulling off some incredible kills and just knowing where everyone is - Really ****ing me off. Rofl, and yet it's been a vital part of competetive PC gaming for a long time now. True competitive clans don't use ghosting at all, and will rely on their own skill. Xbox live, in my opinion, is still alot more casual than PC gaming. You don't tend to get xbox LAN parties, which prevent ghosting since you're right next to the people on the other team who can hear you and shout at you/etc. Meh, oh well... They should introduce some way of seeing if people are in a party chat or not, even when you're not their friend?
Sethos
There is no code of conduct amongst random players, thus they will use ghosting to gain the advantage. This has nothing to do with real competitions, professional clans or anything like that. They just need to disallow parties while playing certain games to be honest, let them use in-game voice. +Mystic MVC Posted December 22, 2008 MVC Share Posted December 22, 2008 Sadly I have seen a ton of this lately especially with Gears of War 2. Not sure why this is just coming up now just because it is named Party Chat, doesn't mean this didn't happen with Private Chat.

HawkMan
Live is the down fall of gaming i mean WTF paying for multi player? yeah , why would peopel want easy matchmaking the ability to just start up and join a game in progress without hunting for servers, or why would peopel want a services that handles voice for them out of the bo, and where you can be sure most of the people you play with have a headset, why would you want a services that auto matches you based on skill+++ yeah, Live is killing online gaming, just look at it, only 10 million subsribers. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 22, 2008 Subscriber² Share Posted December 22, 2008 Can someone explain to me how this works? Is it not just grouping together people to play online, then jumping into a game? How does this change in-game? I'm guessing you can do vocal overlays on top of the game playing, completely skipping the in-game voice chat the game comes with? Which is how people are somehow giving away the location of people when they're dead or something? Sorry, but I ain't been playing much online the past few weeks :(

Giving away positions while dead is more commonly know as "Ghosting". Congrats on the 14k as well (Y)
rage710
If your that antisocial that you don't want to talk to someone while "enjoying" your game, why not decline the invite to join the party in the first place? Personally, I have no beef with talking to someone while playing a game, i'm not one of those kiddies you see in *tube videos that are screaming for idiotic things.. Saying that, I LOVE the fact that I can have more than 1 person in a private chat, as I usually roll with 3-7 people. Its refreshing not to be forced to mute my mic because some idiot is singing Christmas carols in COD. Also, whats wrong with telling your teammate where someone is? Its not like you can follow both teams...

If they used the in game voice support then the dead players cant communicate with the alive players.

Giving away positions while dead is more commonly know as "Ghosting".Congrats on the 14k as well (Y) Ahhh I thought that might be what it is. I mean obviously people on PCs for example can use xfire (?) and other things, but that takes effort. Never really came across situations on my PC gaming where I've really suspected this. If it's integrated into your service though I guess it's much easier to "exploit". Wouldn't remove group chat, it'll be really useful, guess they just have to somehow mute it during some games online and enforce in-game chat only? That would solve it. I mean you should really only be using in-game chat during games anyway. Haha thanks man, I totally didn't realise I'd hit 14k  When a team member dies they can see where the other team players are, then can let the remaining alive players know where they are. If they used the in game voice support then the dead players cant communicate with the alive players. Yeah got it now. That is pretty harsh as if you're left in one of those situations where its you versus 2/3 other people and you have the element of being stealthy and standing a chance of pulling it off, you're now going to basically be raped  Simple fix though of just somehow banning party chat during some online games (Y)
Sethos
Exactly, it takes effort. Plenty of ways to ghost but just clicking "Invite to party" is SO much easier and increases the chance of hitting a pair of ghosters by like 1200% Just today while aiming for my 8th prestige in Call of Duty 4, I ran across no less than 8 clans in varying sizes and I'm sure at least 6 of them was ghosting at times. There's 10 prestige levels in CoD4 and WaW, so 8 is the 3rd from top, pretty good achievement imo Sethos (Y) On CoD4 you only have to reach level 55 before being able to go prestige and starting over from level 1 again :p On WaW there's 65 (?) levels :) I'm only on the 3rd prestige, due to me refusing to go prestige the first time after getting to lvl 55 in 7 days XD Agreed.
