Angry with support and MS crappy Hardware.

Here is the deal...

My sons xbox360 lasted 2 years then the dvd drive stopped working. Decided to just go out and purchase a new one and ship the bad one in latter and put it in my office or whatever.

I purchased a new one 2 months ago. Works fine, no problems. Then today, my son is watching netflix via the xbox and a crazy sound starts coming out of it. Open the DVD tray and he has a halo3 disc in there and it tore into the disk. ****ed, I shut the thing off and turn it back on 30 min later after I calm down a bit. Take COD4 which I just got for him a month ago and put it in to fire it up and test her out. BAM, it does it again tore into the disk and it does not work. Now I am ready to blow my top.

I call into support tell them what is going on and they try to blame me for moving it while the game was playing. I tell them yes I know MS wants everyone to believe that BS but, the xbox has not moved since the day I opened the box and put it on the shelf laying flat down. Fine, they want me to ship it in and repair it for free. Still ****ed because now its the holidays, my kid does not have his XBOX to play and will bug me to use my PS3. Anyways, I thank the guy for his help and ask him who I have to speak to get my 2 games replaced for this defect. He tells me I am out of luck over COD4 and have to contact activision about that but, he says, good news, you can send in your Halo3 disk and a check for 20.00 and we will replace that for you. I flipped and told him to give me his boss. I waited 5 min on hold he comes on and tells me the same thing. Halo3 I have had for 6 months and its out of warranty and COD4 is not there published game so there is nothing they can do about it. BS I told him, this defective xbox destroyed 2 games that cost me 59.00 each and it is his problem. HE would do nothing to help me.

What the hell am I suppose to do now. Yes, I could go and purchase them again no big deal but, just out of pure principle, I can't do that. I want to make a stink about this BS.

Sorry about your luck :/

It seems some ride along fine with their launch consoles, other people get hit like a ****storm with bad luck. My console isn't a launch, but it has old hardware inside it and it's been perfect for me since buying.

I guess the guy filing a lawsuit recently might have a case if the 360 is really shredding discs when it's not being moved. I mean, if you're honest that it wasn't moved or knocked over?

Seeing as it's the one console that's done it twice, it's probably a faulty DVD drive as opposed to 360.

Charging $20 for a replacement is a joke on Halo 3 though, you might even be able to pick up a copy cheaper than that now.

What are the scratches like? Some places can re-surface discs for really cheap.

100% has never been moved or dropped or anything. MS is full of crap trying to push that off as the cause. It is there cheap DVD drives that are causing the problem.

That is unfortunate. I guess it just seems like that 360 random luck. The only problem (for over two years) I ever had was similar to three rings of light last February, other than that perfect performance with two consoles.

indeed just bad luck, but try to calm down, no need to get all worked up like that, big companies aren't moved by it and all you're doing is giving yourself high blood pressure. the choice is now yours, i do understand it's the holidays which is the worst possible time for something like this to happen to a gamer. i'll be frank, i'm on my third 360 but it's ok - she's given me and the people around me so much joy over the last couple of years, i can forgive her this tresspass. up to you to decide if you can do the same.

I don't see why "there" (if you don't care to spell that right) DVD-drives would be any worse than any off-the-market drive. It's not like they go out of their way to find the shittiest components.

Nevertheless, if you're adamant you will probably be able to get a Halo 3 replacement for free. COD4 is, as the guy said, not published by them, and they have absolutely nothing to do with it.

So... ****ty support? They ship you a box in which you place your console, they take said box to wherever they dispose of dead consoles and ship you a new console. Or they repair it. Either way, you get your console back, it's free and you don't even have to suffer the terrible inconvenience of leaving your home.

Also, if you had a company and someone called about a broken disc, would you not even TRY to suggest the user might be at fault to save company resources? After all, have you taken a look at the world? It's nothing personal what they do, but you may know the vast majority of people are STUPID. REALLY stupid.

So yeah... best of luck with your console. Your streak of bad luck must end some time.

Why not send the games to a CD repair shop, I know some places specialize in sanding down the surface and reapplying a new coat - The discs will be like new.

And I don't blame Microsoft for not replacing broken / scratched discs, would just come back to haunt them at some point when every nutcase out there change the position of their 360 with a disc in the drive or doesn't take care of the discs starts sending them in.

I'm a bit confused - you heard the noise, took out the Halo disk and suspected that the DVD drive had damaged it, but then you stuck in another working disk to see whether it really did kill disks?

I wouldn't be surprised if Activision tried to squeeze their way out of liability by arguing that either a). it is Microsoft's fault because of the hardware, or b). it is your fault for sticking the disk in.

The XBOX is like a PC. Microsoft does not make hte hardware so they cannot take full fault. Also, MS will repair the XBOX free of charge for 3 years after it was purchased. They also test and make sure things were working afterwards. You should of sent it in right away to be repaired by a pro. You are lucky they are willing to repair it themselves after you tried yourself.

Your kid will live without the XBOX for a little while. Its not the end of the world and he/she may have to actually go outside and play instead of sitting in front of the TV all day long.

Anyway, I have had my XBOX for a few years and was one of the original ones that is supposed to have all the problems. The only problem I had was the fan attachment that I added and was causing a the XBOX to blink red. Took it off and havnt had a problem since.

If my console had eaten a disc, I'd be damned if I'd put another one in to see if it did it again.

I think that Microsoft should have to replace the game and repair or replace the console. BUT, you should eat the cost of COD4 which is your fault that it got damaged and is now unplayable. If I were Activision and you called me with that story, I'd tell you that you're SOL.

I'm with you on this. Our second Rock Band DVD got ringed. And the kids have their XBox mounted in the entertainment center. It can't be flipped around to different positions unless you unplug it all to pull it out. The unit was already sent in once because of it ringing Rock Band the first time. This is why I took extra care in mounting it and instructing our kids on taking extra care.

I am sure many apologists will say it is all "user abuse" or "bad luck". But the stupid things do have a problem.

That stinks. I've always found Microsoft's hardware support top-notch. I bought an Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 three years ago, and its failed every 8-12 months since. They always promptly send me out a replacement when I call to complain. I'm on my third or fourth replacement now. Maybe XBox support is different than hardware support?

Also, with the game, MS has no way to really know if the console destroyed it or if you or your kids did.

they will fix the item they have promised to warrant. But anything else will only fall under that items warranty.

No disrespect, but you two are the first two people I've ever heard in my entire life that have had a 360 tear a disc. I've had the 360 render a disc unplayable, but only because it scuffed it, and all I had to do was rub it with a cloth and it was good as new -- same as any other disc player.

I fail to see how you having a problem makes everyone an apologist. (And, for the record, I would say the exact same thing if the PS3 or Wii had this issue for two people.)

The Halo 3 disc I can see wanting replaced. The COD4 disc getting ruined was his own fault. So that one was "user abuse". You don't take a good disc and put it into a drive that just chewed up the other disc. If a drive had ate one of my discs, I wouldn't put another in there.

I agree. When we first found our unit was ringing disks, we turned it off and called customer service. It took many calls to get them to actually send the shipping box. Each call said they were shipping the box, but they never did. That was frustrating, but it eventually got sent. Turnaround wasn't too long, and they even fixed the springloaded hinge for the USB cover. (Y)

Microsoft would not cover the media, but I called Harmonix, and they shipped out a replacement CD no questions asked. That was great, as I expected another back-and-forth battle.

But it ringed Rock Band - funny, with it being stationary. Even after the repair to fix the CD ringing issue. Can't say I am happy.

I don't mind people saying that they haven't seen it on their unit, or their friends'. But it is real. It does happen. And it isn't just "user abuse".

The fact that MS mice only last for 8 months is ridiculous, but whats more ridiculous is that you've had 4 replacements since then. I'm still on a logitech laser from 2001.

I would give activision a call, I am sure they have had many other cases of this and won't mind sending out a disk to one of their customers to make them happy.

Way to ruin a kid's Christmas, MS at its best...

You could do something like this guy did. And go even further, charge them for moral damages and for ruining your kid's Christmas.

Next time go with PS3, it's nicely built, it has a blue-ray player and the specs are way better than the DVD destroyer of MS.

If you would have read his first post you would have seen he already has a PS3. Quit trolling, it won't be tolerated.

Threads like this one make me believe the 360 will never truly be fixed. The problems this console has had is an utter joke. In the first year of the console's life, acceptable but to still have them now is ridiculous. I'm sure they know what causes the drive to ring the disc, but it seems they think replacing/repairing consoles, manning support centers to deal with the system's apparent retardation and ultimately wasting paying customers' time is cheaper than just FIXING THE DAMN PROBLEM!

Wow, I have never seen an xbox destroy two discs like that in a row... Remind me to test using a CD-R if that ever happens to me.

I am really confused as to HOW the xbox360 can scratch a disc like it does... I have never had a DVD / CD player in my life, in any of my electronics kill a disc like the xbox360.
