Draken
Popular Science has published a tutorial on how to get your Xbox 360 online wirelessly without having to buy the official Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter. The DYI hack consists in replacing the firmware of a wireless router to make it work as an Xbox 360 wi-fi adapter. The editor at PopSci used an old wireless router he acquired for $40 on Amazon, but you can find a used wireless router on eBay for as low as $15. Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted December 31, 2008 Global Moderator Share Posted December 31, 2008 That's not bad, but I would rather a direct connection. Wireless is unpredictable, and very unreliable when it comes to online games.
killmaster84
I may just try this since I have a extra router sitting here.

I think everyone who has ever played in the same game as me can vouch for my connection being fine and I have been running wireless from day 1. Never ever had a problem with my connection here :)

+Mud W1ggle Subscriber² Posted January 1, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted January 1, 2009 No wireless problems here, either. Am I missing something here? If you have a "spare" wireless router, why not just configure it, plug the 360 into it, and don't worry about the firmware changes? It amounts to the same thing in the end. I'm assuming it only recognises official first party hardware?

I don't think any routers support being put into Bridged mode, as network companies want you to buy their Bridges which cost twice as much.... except for Apple's I do believe, it can do all modes, kudos to them. :) DD-WRT and ..Tomato? Firmwares allow you to though. :) So annoying, my version of the WRT54G is like the only one which you can't easily install DD-WRT on. :(

Smigit
Am I missing something here? If you have a "spare" wireless router, why not just configure it, plug the 360 into it, and don't worry about the firmware changes? It amounts to the same thing in the end. As above, most routers don't support Bridging mode out of the box which is one of the ways you would go about connecting one wireless router directly to another (WDS is another standard). Most routers firmware are designed to have other devices connect to that single router as opposed to having the router connect to another one. I thought this has been known since back in the Xbox 1 days... It has and this isn't a hack at all IMHO. It certainly isn't XBox specific too and I have my desktop doing the same thing with a WRT-600N since I can get better elevation by having an external router as opposed to a pc card handling the wireless. That and the fact I can connect external devices to the network using the one wireless piece of hardware in my room rather than my pc and xbox both having their own adapters (I dont want to use ICS as it requires the PC to be on).
