joshritger
I am looking for a linux distro with a small foot print. This computer is a p3 500mhz with 128 ram and a 1.6gig hard drive. I am looking at donating this computer to a local organization for basic web browsing and office tasks. I have tried installing xubuntu and have not been successful as the hard drive is too small. I know dsl is a good distro but I don't feel that the organization would be comfortable with such a bare bones system. I am looking for a user friendly distro that will fit on the 1.6 gig hard drive. Thanks, Josh
roadgeek9
Fluxbuntu, it's kind of like DSL, but with a touch of Ubuntu... LINK
Fish
Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/ I had this on an old PII 450mhz beast with 128meg of ram. It flew along really nicely. Dead easy to install, and comes with a great selection of apps, although a few of them might not be completely familiar as they're not really "mainstream" as such. But things like Pidgin and Firefox are in the Puppy repo, and they both work really well on it. The default UI has a familiarty about it, and shouldn't pose any problems for anyone. In fact, I almost donated the PC myself, but decided to keep it in the end just to have as a usefull tool.
markwolfe Veteran Posted January 3, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 3, 2009 Another vote for Puppy, if DSL (which uses Fluxbox, same as Fluxbuntu) is not acceptable for your solution.
joshritger
I will give puppy a shot, dsl just seems a little harder for the average user to understand.

Barney T. Administrators Posted January 3, 2009 Administrators Share Posted January 3, 2009 1.6 GB hard drive? Well, if you want a fast distro that is light with all of the main apps, try Debian. Minimal Install: 300MB (No X-windows, Just terminal based login with network running(ssh, ifconfig, wireless, etc)) Mid-install: 404MB (With X-windows system (Xorg) Full -install: 700MB (GNOME, X-windows, graphics drivers, audio, etc) It is fast and quite responsive. You could always substitute Fluxbox or XFCE instead of Gnome and save even more.
