What is the deal with Sims 3?

Wow... once again the sims graphics look like ****

Why can't they at least make better graphics for people with more high end computers?

Don't get me wrong sims is not a bad game, gameplay is very well done

but the look of it compared to most games now is ancient! 2.4ghz P4?? What is this the year 2004???

Dude... it's The Sims

A game played by housewives all around the world on their puny laptops

Oh yes, you really made a point there: they also have massive gaming rigs to run The Sims 3 at 1600x1200

You totally focused on the housewives part. Please, don't feel threatened of being stereotyped just because you play The Sims.

Thanks Hani those are really low! Obviously they want to get as many people playing as possible so the specs. are kept pretty low but jeez. :p Does the latest Intel Integrated graphics come with pixel shader 2.0?

intel newest IGP does support Pixel shader 4/DirectX10 ,but performance sucks as usual(being IGP)

As usual, I expect these specs to be way understated.

Even Sims 2, as old as it is, can make just about any system crawl. Start with a big lot, put a large house in it, put it in a busy neighborhood you're been using for a while, and I don't care how beefy your system is, it'll be slow to load and will be basically unplayable on anything but 'normal' speed. I think EA really expects you to start with new neighborhoods every couple of weeks/months. I've been on the same neighborhood since Day One, and I've just stopped playing entirely because everything crawls.

The Sims--the franchise as a whole--has never been known for doing a good job at optimization. I'm sure the AI engine wastes tons of cycles computing silly behavior-type stuff that most people wouldn't even notice. When I play the game, Task Manager shows around 4,400 handles in use by the process, and it's consuming well over 1GB of virtual memory...I've seen it get near 1.6GB, which is dangerously close to a 32-bit process's limit. It does a ****-poor job at managing resources.

And I'm seeing this as someone who has downloaded very few add-ons, and no third-party hacks or mods.

That being said, I'm not feeling particularly enthusiastic about TS3.

Well, most people that have bought a computer in the past three years *should* be able to run this one very well. But I'm really not looking forward to it. Mainly because my little cousin will want to play it and his laptop SUCKS for graphics, but I suppose he doesn't mind running at 640x480 @ 2FPS

I however hope EA finally pulls it's fingers out and starts support widescreen resolutions. Spore didn't have Widescreen support and I cant even find a shop that still sells 4:3 Monitors. If EA support some VERY basic standards then I might buy this, otherwise, no.

I haven't heard anything about this game for weeks! It is set to release in little over a month and a half there is no buzz at all. I find it kind of a nice change because instead of something getting over hyped (thus more disappointment), this has a fair shot.

What's the buzz?

Did you post this on Mustangworld also>>>> lol

The Creature Creator had widescreen support? The final game did not?

Maybe it was different with Sims 2. Like I said, growing up I put hours and hours into the same lot with tons of add on on a medium spec Gateway 200 computer (oh good ole' Gateways :p) and it ran consistently good.

No, I don't even know what that is...

Well, it certainly did not have 16:9 support. 1366x768

Had 16:10, was running a 22" @ 1680x1050 when i tried it. Too bad, that game is just a series of missed opportunities.

My girlfriend loves The Sims 2, so she will be thrilled to get this. Unfortunately, the specs are kind of high and upgrading just isn't in our budget at the moment. I guess that's why it's nice to have four computers in the house!

Link to the screens please?

All of them. Gamespot, IGN. etc.

Except a higher resolution and maybe higher resolution of textures too, I see no difference. The ehole specs requirement is because it has to load the whole city or neighbourhood altogether when you load a house.

Just eyeballing between Sims 2 and Sims 3 on IGN I noticed quite a bit of polish with Sims 3. The colors are more vibrant, there is a lot more going on the screen along with it be more detailed, and the character models seem to have improved.

That might actually work in my favor--I've essentially stopped playing TS2 because it just takes forever going from lot to lot (even worse changing neighborhoods). Who wants to play the same household for an entire evening?

  • 3 months later...
There much higher than the specs for The Sims 2.

considering the years passed, and hardware advancements, the spec "tiers" weren't so biggy diff than when sims 2 came out
