Puffing out their chest with pride, today Microsoft revealed that - to date - they've sold 8 million Xbox 360 consoles in the European market thanks to record setting holiday sales. Sales that were nearly double that of the same holiday period last year.

"2008 saw us grow faster than any of our competitors and we over-achieved in sales during the crucial Christmas selling period," explained European Xbox VP Chris Lewis. "With eight million consoles sold since we launched, and consistently out-selling PlayStation 3 in EMEA, we're poised to build on this success in 2009." Oh yes, the gloves are off ...

That is really cool considering how the Playstation brand has dominated Europe for so long. This will finally give Microsoft equal footing to battle the Playstation brand in the next generation of consoles.

Most people who I know who would own a console, have a 360.

I bought mine because of the price, and prices are going to be even more important this year.

Congrats to Microsoft. Like I said when the price cut was announced, with it now being the cheapest console (?99 in many places) if you're in the market for a console it makes the most sense. Sony have epically failed by not having a cut until next summer.

It's all about price, specially in the EU. Here where I live the cheapest PS3 pack still goes for 400euros, now that's EUROs, check your exchange rates people, cuz that's basically sony raping you without lube imo.

While the most expensive 360 i've seen is under 300euros.
