ResHack Icon/Bitmap Help!

Recommended Posts

Ummm, hello people, I just joined this forum because I need help!! I know a small amount ResHack, and I have been using it regularly lately. The reason I need help is this:

I hacked the shell32.dll file. I know what I'm doing. I changed almost every single icon, then I saved it and replaced it with Replacer. I rebooted my system, and some things have changed - run, help & support, and control panel. However, some things like my computer or recycle bin doesn't change. Also, my music and my videos change, but my documents and my pictures stay the same!! One more thing is that the shutdown and logoff don't change, even though I loaded a differint icon. This is so extremely annoying!!! PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!! AHHH!!

rebuild iconcache (with tweakUI) (no restart needed) or delete iconcache.db from *username*\Local Settings\Application Data\. then restart computer. or maybe the icon you want to change is in another dll. (i don't know in which one because i don't have icons at all. lol.)

Hmm, that seems like a good idea. I will try it when I get home - I am at a friend's house right now. However, I would appreciate it if some other people could help me out. I realize that the regulars of this forum probably deal with alot of newbs like me - but I'm begging you, please help me!! My problem is bothering me so much. The main thing I want to change are the shutdown and logoff buttons. I'm thinking that maybe these are bitmaps, and not icons...but I'm not sure and thats why I'm asking for help!!

The shutdown and logoff buttons aren't considered icons. They're stored all on one huge bitmap. Follow the guide here. And, the thing about the other icons not changing, dis' explanation sounds right. I tried the same thing trying to change, for example, the Music Folder icon. But, when you restart, the old one is still shown right? But when you go to the folder's properties and try to change the icon, it shows that it's already the changed icon you wanted. If you want to avoid the cache thing, you could change the icon into something different then change it back to the one you want through Properties, but depending on how many you have to change, that'd be a pain in the...

Hey, thanks Jon!! I will check that out. And about the folders - I deleted the cache, and it worked, for most of them. The 'My Documents' and 'My Pictures' are still the same. I right-clicked on them, and there was no option for changing the icon. So I opened up shell32.dll in ResHack, and the icons are the new ones I want. So I searched for the cache file again, and I can't find any. Ugg. So I'm still trying to find out how to change them. One more thing, if anybody know - is there any way to change the icon for a specific HDD? I have three, and I want my C to have the 'Primary Vista HDD' icon. However, I can't find an option to change it. Thanks everyone for the help!!

EDIT:

Jon, that guide wasn't any help. I had already known how to change those bitmaps - I want to change the two icons on the start menu, below 'Run'. Thanks though!

No 'My Documents' or 'My Pictures'....

Okay this is probably a little bit of a lame suggestion but Tuneup Utillities has this future to make icons packs, where you can replace certain icons with another ico file and then just click apply.. Including the My documents and My pictures and so on
