png!!! why is there so much arguing? that's EXACTLY what you need to do that. that's why fireworks's main save format is png... it's MADE for the web like gif but it's a LOT better.

Ive had that happen.

You need to go clean up your button in PS. I mean, use the eraser and zoom WAY in, and erase all around the button, then save, and see if it is still doing this.

jpg does not support transparency...

gif is limited to 256 colors

png is great... its newer so SOME browsers do not support it... i think IE6 for win9x/me doesnt... not sure though... it's all based on the browser's and OS's alpha blending capabilities...

In the save for web window select a color for matte that fits the background of your webpage, in the picture you posted its either none or something close to white. And gif is the best for web when you have under 64 colors cause its way smaller in size than png. Filesize is always important in webdesign.

The problem with transparent gifs is that they always depend on the background, no alpha chanel just empty pixels. No need to save in 256 colors, i never save a gif with more than 32. If needed i change the pallete a bit. None in Matte means white matte.

Try changing the settings and check the difference in the filesize.
