Windows 7, Pin to Taskbar

Recommended Posts

I can't drag anything to the taskbar or pin to the taskbar from the start menu programs. When I try dragging the icon to the taskbar I get a red circle with a line through it. I don't have the option when I right click a program for the pin to taskbar. I've tried setting the drap and drop settings in the taskbar properties and still doesn't work, is this a bug. Anyone know how to fix this?

If you want to permanantly place a program icon on your taskbar, you may want to use the "Quick Launch" toolbar. I don't think you can click-and-drag items onto the taskbar, as the taskbar is supposed to be used for open programs.

Windows 7 doesn't have the quick launch the new taskbar lets you pin programs there, which doesn't seem to be allowing me for some reason.

Update: When browsing to the programs folder in explorer if I drag the .exe to the taskbar I get the text that says pin to taskbar but as soon as I release the mouse it disappears and doesn't pin it.

Any clues?

I guess I should have mentioned that as well earlier, I don't have that option on any desktop launch icon or in the start menu. I also don't have that option after the program is opened in the taskbar.

ummm might sound rude but ummm

are you sure your running windows 7 and if so are you running the new windows 7 beta build 7000 and not some old older build witch may not have these new options and features

These images should clearly answer the above questions. Also showing what I get in the menus, not showing pin the taskbar. I'm using build 7000 which is in the first screenshot, directly from microsoft. Thanks

Edit: What is in the taskbar is running not actually pinned to the taskbar, except for the default wmp, internet explorer and windows explorer.

I did read the thread some of you obviously didn't or you would of seen the pictures I posted. Showing what I've done I don't need someone to tell me how to pin something. I'm looking to see if anyone else has had this issue and found a fix for it or a work around. Thanks

If it still doesn't work after you create a new account, I say you redownlod windows 7, and reburn (at low speeds). and Reinstall...

Edit: Umm if you both don't have it, what programs did you both install (List them all that you've installed)

It doesn't like a image problem. The image would not burn if anything was wrong with it. I am thinking it may have been:

1. This was an upgrade install and an old setting you had set now controls this.

2. A old shell extension he has installed prevents this from working

3. Winrar is installed with Cascaded context menus enabled and icons not turned off, which sometimes causes odd problems in Windows 7.

I had xp installed because the disk wouldn't load after formatting it back to ntfs from ext3 (linux). After booting the windows 7 disk, right after the pretty logo it would get stuck at the point where the install button is, 1-2 minutes in. So after installing xp and getting the win 7 disk to load there it rebooted into the install and I selected it to format the disk and NOT to upgrade.

I don't have winrar installed.

I'm in the process of redownloading the image from microsoft, we'll see what happens this time.

Yes after that post I realized you were probably in the middle or posting a reply as your reply came 1 minute after mine. Sorry

I currently have installed AVG, Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, Vlc, Java, Winamp, CCleaner and Ultra VNC.

Xrandallx (friend), which is the other guy that has the same problems, posted earlier today has Firefox, AVG, Java, Winamp, Windows Live Messenger and Mail, Trillian Astra, Winrar 3.80.

Though he has winrar, I don't see how that can be the issue since I don't have it and I'm still having problems. Although it probably is true winrar has a context menu problem.

Some icons pin and some don't. Computer icon pins, Control Panel icon will not, VLC player will pin, Firefox will pin, task bar will not pin Thunderbird, Opera pins, Ccleaner pins, Spywareblaster pins. Wonder why some do not. I dpn't see why Computer will pin and Control Panel will not.

Computer is still a 'folder'-ish like it used to be wheres control panel has evolved into a full blown completely non-folder derived shell extension. Thus, it won't pin via traditional methods.
