create only parts of visual styles?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I?m just starting modding a visual style for the first time. In fact, I decides to do so when I stumbled over the SevenVG theme for Windows 7 beta - I definitely MUST have the lighting of the programs in the taskbar!

I made myself somewhat familiar with the basics and am able to change the bitmaps etc with ResHacker.

Since I do not want to change everything in a given style, I would like to know if it possible to create a style that only redefines some elements without changing all the other items. I understood that I can simply copy a given style and modify it to me needs. But I?d rather create a style stripped down to the parts I really want to change - not for the sake of saving disk space but to have the option to apply my changes to every style that is currently in use. I hope I made myself clear enough...

Another question: is it possible to change the size of icons in the taskbar? I?m not talking about the quicklaunch (that?s an easy one, I know) but the icons of the currently open programs shown in the taskbar. It is quite clear to me that there is a dependency with the height of the taskbar itself but I want a bigger one anyway.

Thanks for your help!

You can open up the visual style in Resedit or Stylebuilder and save it under a different name. Just edit the parts you want to change and then save it under the name you want to give it :)

Thanks for your answer but that?s exactly what I don?t want: I will then end up with a complete style, containing everything - every single item, even the ones I did not change. But I want a style that only contains the elements I have changed. What for? An example:

Let?s say, I use a style "BlueMod", very nice, but with a boring taskbar. And sometimes I switch to one of 30 other styles - all with a lame taskbar design. So I could go and change all 31 styles to have a neat taskbar design - what a job! The logical consequence is of course - if technically possible - to create a style that only redefines the taskbar elements and does not even contain any of the other elements. With this I hope it should be possible to user whatever style you want and _then_ choose the new one which should leave all previous elements untouched while applying the new settings for the taskbar. Understood?

So my question is: is this possible? At least ResHacker seems not able to delete resources from a file.

And what about the icon size for taskbar items? Anyone?

no it is not possible. because basically you want to use 2 vs at the same time and that is not possible. if a vs is already set, (in example BlueMod with boring taskbar) after that you can't use another vs for skin only the taskbar.

Thanks for clarifying this. I suspected it would be so :(

Then, is there an application out there that lets me easily merge to styles into one?
