Reacon
Most of the new news I've been seeing on Neowin lately is (imo) pretty unimportant. I see plenty of pointless reviews about iPhone apps and plenty about all things Apple and Windows 7. Instead of reviewing two huge hardware releases (the Phenom II and the Nvidia GTX 295), we are getting news about how a "Teen racks up 14,528 texts in one month". I mean come on. Nvidia's new card that dethroned the 4870x2 and AMD's new line on Phenom II processors have been left to Around the Net which absolutely no one pays attention to. This is top news and we're being left with all the unimportant stuff making headlines! Why make a full review of a certain iPhone app when you can obtain a much larger audience by reviewing something somebody cares about. The truth is, the majority of us don't even have iPhones, let alone will we want to play games on a touchscreen.
capr
unimportant to you might not be unimportant to everyone else... give it time, maybe someone is in the process of writing up a good review with colorful charts and cool stats for different games.... or the people who happened to upgrade to those things are just too busy right now. Sethos
There's a million sites out there covering hardware, why not just use them?

Reacon
There's a million sites out there covering hardware, why not just use them? That's what this site used to be. Practically a million sites in one. That's why I (used to) like it. You know, it's not easy having to read 4-5 news sites at once.
Frank
Reviews is something Neowin really hasn't focused on in the past but I think this could change in the future. unimportant to you might not be unimportant to everyone else... +1 There's a million sites out there covering hardware, why not just use them? Well, if we take that stance there is also millions of forums and news outlets.... why is there a Neowin at all?

Sethos
You know, it's not easy having to read 4-5 news sites at once. Why would you read them at once, just have a few bookmarks and check them regularly like normal people. Well, if we take that stance there is also millions of forums and news outlets.... why is there a Neowin at all? Choice. Since Neowin is offering bobkus hardware news it's not exactly in the "choice" range, is it? And why just wipe this off in his shirt, having him submit news he comes LOOKING for? +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted January 16, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted January 16, 2009 Larry managed to get some gaming hardware to review - https://www.neowin.net/news/gamers/09/01/14...-adapter-review You guys should encourage him to get more. A site this big could probably get companies to send things for review. Nothing wrong with some more emphasis on reviews, but the site mainly does cover software so either way it's up to the staff I wouldn't be wanting to push for anything else really. Yeah, I saw that one. I do normally enjoy his reviews. As for the submit news form, I've never seen that before. Thanks for the tip.
Joel
And why just wipe this off in his shirt, having him submit news he comes LOOKING for? Would you write your local newspaper or news station and tell them to report more of what YOU wanted?

Easier said than done considering one would have to establish a certain review quality level (in terms of bias, hardware rating etc)] before companies even begin to take a good look at sending hardware. MR_Candyman
Hmm...I might be tempted to write a review on the majority of hardware I get I suppose. It might do some people good. My next hardware purchase is probably going to be a SAS controller and some cheetah hard drives, which I'll raid0. I don't currently have a raid setup, but I could possibly run some benchmarks on the drive I have now and one of the new ones, and then on the raid. I doubt a SAS review will help many people (since a SATA setup is cheaper), but for those looking for the best performance, it might be worthwhile. Sethos
Would you write your local newspaper or news station and tell them to report more of what YOU wanted? No I wouldn't?! I would just change the channel or pick up one of the 5 free newspapers.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted January 17, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted January 17, 2009 Most of the new news I've been seeing on Neowin lately is (imo) pretty unimportant. Most articles get on average 10,000 hits, that's unimportant? I see plenty of pointless reviews about iPhone apps and plenty about all things Apple and Windows 7. Both are easily obtainable, and can be reviewed for people. It also helps spread word of these apps or releases of windows 7 that ultimately interest people. Instead of reviewing two huge hardware releases (the Phenom II and the Nvidia GTX 295), we are getting news about how a "Teen racks up 14,528 texts in one month". I mean come on. Nvidia's new card that dethroned the 4870x2 and AMD's new line on Phenom II processors Once again, the statement above is what i hold to this. We news staff are regular students / workers who don't have a neowin company credit card to rack up and buy hardware for review purposes like other major web sites. have been left to Around the Net which absolutely no one pays attention to. This is top news and we're being left with all the unimportant stuff making headlines! Why make a full review of a certain iPhone app when you can obtain a much larger audience by reviewing something somebody cares about. Do you have statistics showing around the net is getting ignored? We'll I certainly have some statistics, and they show Around the Net is not being ignored. The truth is, the majority of us don't even have iPhones, let alone will we want to play games on a touchscreen. Yes, that probably IS true, but you can never please every single person in the world all at the one time. Nothing in the world could please everybody, someone will always have an opinion of something, or love/hate what someone else does.

We are all open to invitations on what you want posted, either PM us, or reach some of us on the IRC, I am usually watching #neowin, just not talking :ninja: I have also put in requests to companies for gadget reviews, with one only reply so far, that being the Easeus Recovery Data Wizard Pro, it was a software, but at least I got a reply from them. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted January 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 17, 2009 Easier said than done considering one would have to establish a certain review quality level (in terms of bias, hardware rating etc)] before companies even begin to take a good look at sending hardware. Lets just say I am working on doing just that, as luckily I made some contacts at CES. So literally the request by the OP may be met and then some, however as you said it is a matter of establishing good relationships and proving reviews can indeed be a fair and unbiased review, which takes a long time and does not happen over night. sundayx Veteran Posted January 17, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 17, 2009 Alternatively if you are looking for hardware reviews, there are plenty sites out there that cover a lot more specifics than Neowin can offer. Just Google the hardware you are looking for plus the word 'review' behind it.
Joel
So literally the request by the OP... Oh, you saw a request? I saw someone who didn't know how to type a request, and instead came off like someone with no tact.
