Which game(s) would you say has the best soundtrack? I have been playing Elder Scrolls IV and have been enjoying the soundtrack! I would appreciate all input on this matter! :)

Some soundtracks I like:

  • Alone in the Dark (recent one)
  • BioShock (intense, creepy cues)
  • Donkey Kong Country (jungle themes)
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 (one of my all-time favourites)
  • Donkey Kong Country 3 (more relaxed)
  • Gears of War
  • Gears of War 2 (from the composer who did The Island and Transformers - love those too)
  • Halo 3 (very heavy orchestration)
  • King Kong (available free)
  • PaRapper the Rapper 2 (yes, I like the crazy songs)
  • Super Mario 64 (another all-time favourite)
  • Tomb Raider: Anniversary (free, some ambient, many intense cues)
  • Tomb Raider: Legend (free, some ambient, action cues)
  • Tomb Raider: Underworld (free, focuses heavy on the ambience, new composer!)

My criteria involve quality (modern games that still use midi don't make the cut, cough, twilight princess) mood (how it ties in with the game), and how it sounds. All original content (sorry Bioshock, Fallout 3, Tetris and GTA). Of course this is all subjective and I'm guessing many of you will disagree with my choices:

Favourites:

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Halo, Star Wars KOTOR, Zelda, Zero Wing (no joke), Final Fantasy (hard to choose one), Age of Empires 2 & Expansion

Second Favourties:

Starcraft, Portal (still alive), Zelda, Fallout 3, Riven, Sonic 2, Super Mario, Planescape Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil, Team Fortress 2, Oblivion, Deus Ex, Crysis.

Icewind Dale. This game features the best artwork I have ever seen in a video game, both in the graphics and the music. It looks hand-painted but it's all high-detail 3D renders; the music perfectly fits the gritty, tribal theme and adds a whole dimension of its own. All the weapons sound true-to-life, voice acting is high-class, all the story, dialogues and background info is delightful... But back to the music, it's really great. And it's Jeremy Soule.

World Of Warcraft has some excelent music. I've recentley completed Max Payne 1 & 2 again and the music brought back some memorys. Excelent. And also Quake 3 really has some great ones too :)

I can't really name a specific game's music as the best ever, but I will say that the main theme from Metal Gear Solid 2 was just awesome (at least I think it was 2, never played it so I could be wrong)

Also, the main theme to the Battlefield series just kicks ass. But as for best soundtrack/overall music, way to many to mention. There have been some amazing pieces over the years.

Medieval 2 & Rome Total War

Gta (the original, haven't played gta 2 that much, and the other sequels featured popular songs, so can't comment on it)

Nfs 3 (amazing rock tracks)

Nba 99 (had great funk tracks, shame ea went for shabby hip-hop/rap songs, they suck)

Diablo (the st set the atmosphere almost on its own)

Can't think of any other ones right now.
