agreenbhm
I've got Vista on my main machine. I've got a laptop with Ubuntu Intrepid and XP dual booting. I have an unused laptop hdd that I decided to throw 7 on so I can test the real thing rather than just virtualized. Problem is, now I've got a hdd with too few OS's on it! What do you think would be best suited to reside alongside the Windows 7 beta? Linux Mint is very sleek, as is 7, so I thought that might be a good match. What are your suggestions? tsupersonic
Doesn't really matter, any distro will work, you're going to be using Grub...
jakem1
Does this really belong in a Windows 7 forum?

Anibal P
no it doesn't belong here, honestly 7 out performs linux by miles IMO ! You'd be wrong But 7 is definitely a huge improvement over XP/Vista

Denholm
I can recommend Linux Mint 6, it's built on Ubuntu 8.10 and it dual boots flawlessly with Win 7.

DomZ
As already mentioned, it's sort of a moot point as most of them use the same boot loader (grub) anyways
i_was_here
Just use whatever distro you like.
Growled Member Posted January 20, 2009 Member Share Posted January 20, 2009 I would recommend you give openSuse 11.1 a try. It's what I'm using at the moment. It's a bear to set up but once you get it right it's great. Yast is a great tool for configuring things. I never thought I would like openSuse. Debian Lenny is awesome as well but the packages are a bit dated. It's stable as heck, however, and light on the resources. An excellent server. You might like Ubuntu but all my experiences with it have been bad.
DigitalE
Is there some sort of rule that you have to dual boot...?

agreenbhm
Research for yourself. that's what this thread is. i know of various linux distros. who woulda thunk this thread would get so much negative feedback. i'm just asking for a general opinion of which distro most closely resembles 7. if you don't have anything constructive to add, why post? IMO, the post you refer to is the most constructive post in this thread. You are asking what distro looks like Windows 7. A proper answer (and the proper research) would show you that distribution has absolutely nothing to do with looks. You can take linux -- any distro of linux -- and make it look like whatever the hell you want it to look like. I can take IceWM and make it look like Windows Mobile for christ's sake. If you are looking for a window manager or a desktop environment that resembles Windows 7 out of the box your best bet is to look at KDE4. There's already a pinned topic at the top of this page called : "Pinned: A Neowin Guide to Linux Distributions". But to cut you reading short, there's none. None "closely resembles" Microsoft?> Windows 7?>.
