Marshalus Veteran Posted January 26, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 26, 2009 I'm not a fan of putting a list of sourced links under the article, because unfortunately it confuses other websites into thinking we've lifted the article rather than submitted it ourselves. If you look at any other (popular) news outlet they source within the article by either embedding the link in the source site name, and in many cases they cite the site name and don't even link to it!We have a clear separation of whats ours and what isn't now, whatever is in Around the Web, has been lifted from elsewhere and is clearly sourced (old school style) with the source link under the article text, and our own stories (in the left column) have embedded inline links where we have used it as a reference. +BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted January 26, 2009 Subscriber¹ Share Posted January 26, 2009 I am getting used to the front page, but I would like to have the option of auto refreshing forum posts, maybe just for subs and have it turned off by default and set by a cookie or flag of some kind? Again like Raa it is a personal preference as I do not like the Forum iteration as noted below :( That is the only feature I would like back from before the redesign. I appreciate that the option is there if you go to the forum view, but in that view you do not get taken to the latest post, if you have read the thread before, you just always get taken to the first post. Just my tuppence worth.
+shift. MVC Posted January 26, 2009 MVC Share Posted January 26, 2009 Did you reply to my #1 or #2? #2, about the Hum's World News; no offense to Hum of course.
Neo003
I'm not going to read the whole thread, but for last couple of week I keep getting these ads?s about BlueCross or something and now DirecTV. I understand that you might not have that many subscribers. But please at least make the ad's a little smaller and not to mention that they keep popping up every 3 seconds. I don't mind the Google like ad but these flash ads are pain in the but.
Nicholas-c Veteran Posted January 27, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 27, 2009 I really like the changes to the Front Page News a lot!I also prefer (to a smaller degree) that Neowin clearly link to the source article, if one or more articles is used as a source. I'm not a big fan of the "I used several articles, so just embed a small link in the article text somewhere" that seems to have sprung up, but I don't have a strong feeling about that. Yes, I like the separated source link. (unsolicited) I really, really like the original articles coming out of Neowin's News staff lately! (Y) Re-hashing existing stories as "semi-original" appeals to me about as much as yesterday's meat loaf, warmed over for lunch today. It gets the job done, but lacks the appeal of truly original content. And dressing it up to present it as something more than it really is... It doesn't fool many people. ^ that = true. 84Mark
Coming into this thread a bit late but here goes. I really dislike the new Front Page. It's small and cluttered and consequently I read it far less. I have a high screen resolution but most of it is wasted (see screenshot). It's slightly better when the "> <" function is used - but this setting gets lost frequently (and is still buggy) and there's still a lot of empty space. I much prefer the old way of presenting articles - you got to read a proper introduction and view the sources. The whole page seemed a lot less cluttered too. +BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted January 29, 2009 Subscriber¹ Share Posted January 29, 2009 Will let the devs decide on that one. As for the &view=getnewpost I have asked the devs to change that as it should go to the last post definitely. Thanks Thanks for the reply. Is there a timescale as to when that will be implemented, as if it is I would bypass front page totally, as it is no use to me without the autoupdate of forum posts, and the forum is useless without the "getnewpost" feature on clicking. On a side note, I noticed that the "getnewpost" function is no longer available on control panel and subscribed posts, when it used to be.
FiB3R
Play / Pause / Reload buttons on the front page for "Latest Community Activity" would be great. Being able to minimise/maximise "Latest Forum Activity" like a drop down menu, would also be cool. When I go to a thread, the first thing I want to see are post's. :)
