HawkMan
We already have games on the PC that are just not possible on the consoles because of ram limitations on all consoles. Blue-Ray is nice but Most people are not really interested in blue-ray. uh huh.. your claims are useless without actual examples.
neoadorable
sure Kaz, leave the PS3 on the market 50 years, then you can claim 500 million units sold. maybe not as game-playing machines, but sold.
Ricardo Gil
Speaking just on the article, I disagree heavily. Console life is usually what, 3-5 years? I'd say 360 has satisfied that and the PS3 is just entering into it's 2nd year of life. Now back to the longevity, if a Blu-Ray player was slapped into a 360, would it have a greater lifespan? They are equal hardware-wise so the only deciding factor would be Blu-Ray it would seem. "Console life is usually what, 3-5 years?" - No, but hardware refresh is, I think that's what you meant to say. "the PS3 is just entering into it's 2nd year of life" - Actually the PS3 is in its third year already, and the 360 in its 4th.
CelticWhisper
I wish this crap would stop. As I've said before, the entire industry needs to grow up. Would a little professionalism and tact be asking too much? I'm not saying that Hirai and Sony shouldn't be proud of the PS3 - it seems they've built an impressive machine. However, it's possible to play that up without trashing the competition and coming off like immense jackasses in the process. It seems like the mentality has been: Nintendo: Fun fun fun for ev-ry-one! Microsoft: Neat technology here, we do cool stuff and we think you'll like it. Sony: Nintendo and Microsoft are garbage, buy our console or you're a less worthy human being. One of these things is not like the other. If they want to play up Blu-Ray or the Cell, they can do that by saying "we have this and use its power to do...THIS!" We KNOW that the Xbox doesn't have Blu-Ray. We KNOW that the Wii is less computationally powerful. You don't need to smash these points into people's heads over and over - customers are capable of doing their own research. Hirai would look much more respectable if he focused on the good points of what the PS3 does have instead of making comparison charts that always end with "360 lacks potential/360 lacks power/Nintendo is trash/LOLWII/OMGSUX." Looking at specs, I think the PS3 can stand on its own. What baffles me is that Sony seems hellbent on refusing to just let it. EDIT: Just read the "official leadership" part. What the hell is the man thinking? The 360 had a year's head start, so that takes care of first-to-the-game; the Wii is utterly handing the PS3 its ass in sales figures, so that takes care of numbers; and Final Fantasy...Final Fantasy, of all games...is going cross-platform, after being a PS-exclusive series for over 10 years. How does any of this constitute "official leadership?" Edited January 20, 2009 by CelticWhisper

I think the execs at Sony have some kind of mental deficiency or something. Good old kookie Ken was no better.

bob_c_b
Sony could bounce right now, they just need more games that are either exclusive or better on the PS3. As it stands now one a few of the PS3s top tier devs really get the most out of the console, where we get a true PS3 experience. When it comes to cross platform titles in almost every case the game is better on the 360. Combined with exclusive DLC, a more usable friends sytem and a larger catalog, the 360 is more compelling to gamers. I want my PS3 to be more than my BD player, but I only get a couple times a year to really feel that way.

Ayepecks
10 year lifecycle? lolwut He's referring to the Playstation 1 and 2. I'm amazed how he can say that Microsoft hasn't had a console yet last 4 years, yet they're committed to a 10 year scenario.... ummm, hate to break it to him, but this isn't last generation. Yes, Microsoft was behind. But given that the 360 has already surpassed the original Xbox, I think it's a bit moot to try and compare the two. Microsoft was just getting started with the original. Emn1ty
Yeah, I'd expect him to say "We're going to fail, Xbox is better and it will last longer" in an interview OPM conducts/asks questions. However have fun taking another PR/CEO having confidence in his console comment to heart everyone, and all the best with the arguing like every other topic mirroring this one. This is beyond confidence and is blatant, "The other guys suck, buy ours" idiocy. Sony needs a Chuck Norris roundhouse to their ego. At least Microsoft just talks about their own console. We already have games on the PC that are just not possible on the consoles because of ram limitations on all consoles. Blue-Ray is nice but Most people are not really interested in blue-ray. Uh... right. While I agree with the last half the first half is just wrong.

Nintendo in no way is on the same playing field as the PS3 or the 360.

Indeed. It's amazing he can suggest that it "lacks longevity" right after they just did a massive software update on an unprecedented scale to tens of millions of machines. And I see no sign of them stopping that. For Microsoft, the killer innovations are now in the software. THAT is going to be the achilles heel of the PS3 (well, in addition to all the other ones, like its price and lack of games).
Remysaus
Hirai said that, regardless of install base, or who sold more and when, "I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry." doesn't that really say enough? they're both in for the long haul and i have no doubt there won't be a "winner" both will be pretty equal since they practically have all the same titles released, except for some exclusives obviously. next generation microsoft might be the first again to release a new console, but that would be pretty logical, they were the first this generation.. BajiRav
Few more gems from him, You'll find two things of interest. Here's one:This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who's got the biggest install base, or who's selling most in any particular week or month, but I'd like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry. And here's another: We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years? Source That is just stupid.
Smigit
"Last time I checked, they've never had a console that's been on the market for more than four or five years and we've committed to a ten year life cycle, so you do the math.I did the math and concluded that MS has only had one console previous to the 360 and while that didn't last all that long, I'd say one console isn't exactly pointing towards a long history of short lived consoles. :sSony should really just shut their mouths. Of the three companies they seem to always be the ones jumping in to slag others while MS and Nintendo are happy to just talk about how their sales are strong relative to others or what their future outcast is. They certainly don't seem as keen on a ****ing contest as Sony is.

This sounds like an old hardware company that?s comfortable with its market position. That complacent attitude is out of touch with where the industry and consumer is today. This generation won?t be won over just hardware specs, but who can out-innovate when it comes to online and software. This is the kind of stuff that?s in our DNA, and frankly moves the console war onto our home court. I?m confident we will outsell the PS3 throughout the entire generation by providing more innovation and building the best and broadest games library while growing our entertainment experiences on the leading online network. With a U.S. install base lead now of more than 7 million units (according to NPD), I can?t imagine any scenario where the PS3 can catch up with us. In fact, even if you doubled the current PS3 sales and Xbox 360 remained flat, they couldn?t close the gap until 2014. Kotaku

scratch42069
After reading the front page stories on both Microsoft and Sony, I think there's no shot of a comeback because of the lost profits. They need to start accepting that "flea-marketers", as Sony lovingly refers to poor people as, are going to be the source of revenue throughout the rest of the PS3's life now.
