Halo ODST takes stealth approach

Recommended Posts

By the sounds of it, the usual jump-grenade-assault-riffle-melee attack won't work in Halo ODST like it does in Halo 3, as writer and creative director Joseph Staten explains the game's more tactical approach.

"The silenced SMG is just one of the tweaks to the Halo 3 sandbox that make ODST a stealthier experience -- one that, at least in the open environment of nighttime New Mombasa, rewards a more measured approach to combat," explains Staten.

"As a non-Spartan, you'll need to be careful about the fights you pick, especially when you're on your own," he added, and that's because the enemies are smarter this time.

"Brutes in ODST are much more interested in self-preservation than they were in Halo 3 which makes for terrific, multi-layered encounters," said Staten.

"You need to think before you engage -- decide how you want to take apart an encounter before diving in or you'll get into trouble pretty quick, especially on higher difficulty levels.

"Unlike a Spartan, an ODST doesn't have shields. You're a little slower too, so if you get hit you can't just run sprint to safety," Staten told GamePro.

I just hope he remembers how he wrote ODSTs in the books :p They ain't big on stealth, that's for sure. OK, compared to a Spartan they need more tactics, but I really hope it doesn't go too far over into stealth, given the name.

Is this a standalone game or an addon for Halo 3? can't glean much info on it.

It's standalone. The events take place sometime between halo 2 and halo 3.

It actually isn't. It technically is an expansion to Halo 3 since it will sport only around 4-6 hours of gameplay max with a spinoff-MP expansion. It really isnt' a ful game and won't even have a full $59.99 price tag (most likely $39.99 or $49.99).

Bungie debunked the 4-6 hours of gameplay thing like 2 months ago and said it'd probably have more.

He meant it's standalone as in it'll be released on disc and not download, I believe :)

Pretty much, also it's standalone because you don't need Halo 3 to play ODST.

$30 to 40 for about 6 hours of game play.

Uh...no thanks.

Read my last post. Bungie denied that rumor.

Also, Halo 1 was a 6 hour game on normal difficulty and many people paid $60 for that...

I think you meant Halo 3. Halo 1 was bloody long.

I can believe that if you did a couple of the shortcuts like jumping from the cliff in Silent Cartographer (or using the warthog to get through the door) and snatched a banshee on the snow bridge in Attack on the Control Room. All of those could nock a good 40 minutes off the game. There are also some others I am not aware of. Bungie also said the closest thing to the actual Halo canon is actually the Heroic setting, which definitely packs more than 6 hours.

Actually, I am not wrong since I did over-estimate.

"First of all, while Halo 3: Recon did originate with the goal of building a 3 to 5 hour campaign experience..." And they did say at one point the game would not cost the same as Halo 3, since it is an addition to the game and not a complete "stand alone" title.

Exactly what I meant :p

Sorry, my mistake.
