Technique
What are the newer ones like? This thread is sent out to those who loved the CM 97-98 game, Champ Man 3, 00-01, that sort of thing I forget the last Championship Manager i played. I think it was 01-02. Either way. i think they started wrecking it when they made it too technical. That's what made the earlier ones so great. Buy players, pick a team, play. Not spend half a day sorting out training procedures etc. Which is why i wonder what the new ones are like.
CapedCrusader
I've been playing CM/FM since 96/97. I would avoid the new CMs, I haven't actually played CM since the first 2 after the split, but they were both terrible, and I doubt they've improven enough to be comparable to FM. The newer FMs have been pretty good, and you can leave all the training schedules and whatnot on defaults and it'll be fine, or let your assistant handle a lot of the more technical stuff that you can't be bothered to sort out. Personally, I think thats where the most fun is, tweaking all the little things in the tactics, but each to his own. The training got a fairly big overhaul at some point, and I think the one you don't like was the one where you have routines you have to choose for each day? The new training is much simpler, its just a slider for defence, tactical, attacking, set pieces, etc and takes very little time to set up. I think its definitely worth downloading the demo and seeing if you like it. You can download the demo from the sigames website, and it lasts either 12hours or half a season, depending which one comes first. One word of warning though, the new FM is an absolute pain to install. It has layers and layers of copy protection that simply don't work and stop you playing the game. It took my friend over a week to actually start a game after purchasing it, and mine took about 5 attempts before I got it working. I probably won't buy the next version until I know if its got all this copy protection stuff on it.

Martyn
The new ones are pretty poor. CM 01/02 is where it is still at for me. Anyway... Get on it lad ;) https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...#entry590801056
FxVisor
Football manager 2008 was pretty good, 2009 is too lame tactically (you have to give too many individual instructions) Professional footballers should not need much instruction. I would avoid the new Championship Manager series (unless the new one due out this month is alot better) Football manager is from the makers of the original Championship manager games. choppingman
Just my opinion. I have played the majority of the games in the Fm and Cm series, and although it may have its doubters, FM2009 is by far the most sorted, most challenging game (played without editors of course) in all series. Patch 3 was just released and gives you what is quite close to a snapshot of where world football is at today. So much to do in the game, so many highs and lows. Also, its the only officially supported version for Vista :)
ylcard
CM01/02 was probably the best game they made (well perhaps 00/01 came close). 4 was horrible. The FM series are nice but for some odd reason they refuse to work smoothly on my PC's, I don't think my PC is on the weak side, yet I find myself being angry at the perforamnce more than at how ****ty I am at managing :) Lost every possible title last season :( (runnerup/second place)
