Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 2 beta live on Steam

Recommended Posts

In celebration of THQ and Relic Entertainment's highly anticipated Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II multiplayer beta, Steam is now offering Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm for 75% off the suggested price. Anyone with an electronic or retail copy of Dawn of War - Soulstorm and a valid CD key may register their game with Steam and join the early access to the Dawn of War II beta today. Also beginning today, the full version of Dawn of War II may be pre-purchased via Steam. And on January 28, the beta is scheduled to open to gamers around the world (free of charge via Steam).

So if you own Soulstorm already, or buy it for whatever they are offering it now, you can get early access to the beta. Enjoy everyone :)

Capturing resource points. Units are built through the HQ now.

hmm kinda makes sense though. and more true to Warhammer 40k, as far as building structures is anyway.

I have been playing the beta for a few days now, and i must say, after the initial difficulty understanding the game (the curse of being such a different game from the originals) Im having alot of fun :)

anyone wanting more info on the game watch this 20 min vid of testers and devs in a 3 v 3 match

I HIGHLY recommend watching it, it will give you a real feel for the game

the move way from building a base stops the turtle tactics, and forces players to go on the offensive sooner.

The only thing that puzzles/annoys me about the game so far, is the inclusion of the "games for windows" and the need to have an account in order to save any games/data.

why?!?! just... why?!! its so illogical, you are distributing a game on steam... it has a built in gui overlay, a built in friends list, and now with cloud you can save your settings to steam no matter what pc you use. so WHY?!!

I've been playing the beta sometime now, and I for one, completely love this game. Even if the base building is gone, this is dow and all the epicness still there. Can't wait untill the beta goes open and I can start playing with my friends (since they are cheap and didn't bought soulstorm, nor wan't to pre-buy without trying the game).

I just finished a 15 minute game and I'm liking it so far. At first, I didn't know what the hell I was doing. Nonetheless, it only took me a couple of minutes to get the hang of things.

EDIT: Wow, I just had the most amazing game ever. I witnessed a bunch of new attacks for the first time. The graphics in this game are beautiful!

How do I bypass the intro?

Every time I load it on steam, I have to watch the 5 minute intro.

Right click , properties and click on "set launch options" add -nomovies.

where do i need to type in the cdkey?

Ive installed it and signed up to windows live and played online.

so where do i need to type it in?

I don't know. I downloaded it via STEAM and played it right away. It showed a CD-key but it said to type it in when the game asks for it, which it hasn't (so far).

I just found a site saying:

I cant link the site because its say that the word 'somethingawful' is a back word.

That key pop-up is a huge source on confusion, and we've gotten Valve to disable it.

If you have the beta available in Steam at all, you don't need to worry about the Soulstorm key anymore. The Beta installer auto-populates your GFWL key (at least it should.) It was also popping up a 'helpful' pop-up to tell you what that key is. Of course since it is usually already entered it doesn't really help you that much.

This key isn't stored in the Soulstorm registry entry, you can find it here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\THQ\Dawn of War II Beta

If the key in that field matches that of your pop-up, LIVE has the key.

When you boot the beta you need to log in to a Gamertag. You can use one that already exists, or create one through the link in the game. Note that if you are in an unsupported region there is a workaround to get an account working.

That means we don't have to worry about the cdkey then. I've just checked that registry entry and that cdkey is already in there.

Man, the graphics in this game are just insane. And it runs so damn well too. I'm definitely buying it when the full version is released. It should hold me out until StarCraft II is released. By the way, I figured this would be "popular" on Neowin.

I don't think this game is getting all the hype it deserves, because, personally I find it to be awesome and tons of fun in 3v3 matches, can't wait for retail to get some variety on the maps.

There won't be that much variety to my knowledge, and I wish I could find the link where I read this information, the game will only be launching with 5 MP Maps and with 2 coming 'soon' after launch in the form of a bonus patch.

What? If that's the case then I might not buy the game. I was really looking forward to play a variety of maps. I suppose I might buy it if the Dawn of War community creates maps, but only if the maps are good.

Kotaku Review

Dawn of War 2 will launch with something like six maps. Before you start sputtering in rage that Relic would dare deprive you of 14 other maps you'll never play – let me just say that the three that were available for the hands-on were pretty damn decent. The layouts were varied, the environments were distinct from one another, and really, how many maps do you need in a game that you just know will have expansions?

Sorry I can't find anything more definitive but it seems the marketing department at THQ don't want this fact expressed.

I enjoy the game but I doubt I will get it, the replayability just isn't there for me, played the beta a bit and enjoyed it but there is nothing drawing me back to it. The only thing that interests me is the campaign and I will just pick the game up when its cheap.
